String gauges, jazz/jaguar basses

Hi I have some light gauge flatwound rotosounds on my jag bass, gauge 100, 80, 60, 40. I find the bottom string too fat, and is much more powerful than the other strings. So naturally I change the pick up height so the pick ups are closer to the top string and further away from the bottom string.

However, now I find the top string too loud and the bottom string too loud, and the middle two get lost in the mix.

What string gauges have you tried on jazz and jaguar basses with what pick up height alterations etc. that you have found work reasonably well.
I was thinking heavier G, D and A strings, but I quite like low tension too.

So basically, I am confused! Any light you can shed on the mysterious matter of string gauge I would appreciate!
