Depends on the bass also.

Indeed. What I actually meant was that on the portion of my trip that STARTED IN WALES AND ENDED IN IRELAND, people started talking in an increasingly incomprehensible fashion, often using words that sound much like "Drillid".

I don't think that's entirely fair to say. Any bass will be louder with higher string height... but a cheap bass won't project nearly enough if the strings are low.

In May my school's jazz band is going to perform at the Essentially Ellington competition finals in NYC, and I know that I will not be able to use an amp (they are crazy about authenticity). So I am keeping the string height on my bass intentionally a bit higher, just for the extra punch. Even though the instrument is nice and projects fine with the strings low, there are still occasions where raising them is appropriate.

That is what I meant to say. I have a cheap bass that has no sound with low action. With mid-high action it sounds ok.


So the quality of your bass will limit your minimum string height also. You can always go as hi as you need
