String ID

I don't know about that, but $30 is an inexpensive fix so if that works for you, then I'd say problem solved.
I've had the bass for nearly 15+ years, and never played it! As-new condition. If I don't like it much, I'll sell it, and it would be good to be unmolested (not that it's at all collectible, it's a low-budget grade USA Gibson.) I've been calling it an "EB" but it's actually an "SG".

Straying off topic here, but in thinking about strings and Hofner style basses, I went to Hofner's site and looked at their violin bass specs. I noticed their as-shipped action heights listed. Made me want to check my own Epi viola bass action height, arrived at over years playing gigs and experimenting, with no notion of "typical" bass actions. (I'm a guitarist and tech who sets up many guitars as a sideline, switched to bass some years ago, but I haven't worked on basses.) Well, my current setup is exactly where Hofner sets up their violin basses: 'E' 3mm to 'G' 2mm. I don't know why it surprised me, but it did.

Update: I ordered and received the "Mod Bar" (recommended by S.F.Sorrow) for my Gibson 3-point bridge. Extends the ball-end anchor points back about 3/4 inch, to prevent the winding wrap-arounds from riding over the bridge saddles. A simple but well executed and finished bit of steel.

PS it could add enough length to favor the "medium" length GHS strings.
PPS nope, it only pulls the ball end back about 3/4", so 32.75" "short" GHS will still be required. Not even close really.

Yo know what? I actually used the Medium 35.5 set on it, per michael_t's assessment, and they work perfectly. Except the 'G' string is a howler, it beats against itself played open, and fretted 1 through 4. Up from there it's perfect. I put the old string back on and it works fine, so the new one must have a hidden flaw. ;-(
