Double Bass String ID?

Morning, all.

Yesterday I bought a Czech factory bass that came strung with strings I can't identify.

They have a steel core and flat steel windings, between which is woven multicolored fibers of some sort. The silks match on both ends of the string, E black, A dark green, D light blue and G red.

The feel is spongy and sustain is non-existent but they sound good under the bow. Guy I bought the bass from said they were on it when he bought the instrument three years ago. Any ideas?

Sounds like the typical Chinese made strings that come on so many factory basses. I am not a huge fan of them, although they bow OK. They have an uninspiring pizz toe IMO. I would replace them when you get the chance.

That's a nice way of saying it. They remind me of those kicker boxes we used to put in the trunks of our cars before we knew better.
Was hoping to put a name to them so I never made a mistake and bought them myself. Thanks very much for the guess.

You probably can't buy them from retailers.
I guess they're put on new instruments at the factory because they cost nothing.

Agreed, I wouldn't worry about the possibility of making the mistake of buying them.

Those color codes don't ring any bells with any standard-name manufacturer I've ever seen.
