D'Addario has started a new string recycling program called 'Playback' and has teamed up with TerraCycle. You can get free shipping labels.

I am coordinating will local music stores as drop off points, and I'll do the leg work of collecting and shipping. I just though others might also be interested in doing the same in your locations.

Just for the record, my being a die-hard flatwound enthusiast has everything to do with being environmentally-conscientious as flats don't need to be recycled nearly as often as rounds.

It's skinny stringers that need to recycle the most. If you look at your region, how many pounds of strings are being hauled off to the landfill? There shouldn't be any, so any initiative is a good one.

I literally couldn't give away my pile of old strings, I thought they would be more than worth it for D'addario points, so I ended up sending the down to Fretwell. I had to laugh when I found out that one of my boxes was so heavy I had to send it priority shipping. No good deed goes unpunished. It put me back about $40 but I felt much better about myself.

So do you mean that music stores are actually string recycling drop off points, or suggesting that they should be?

It's a strange thing, isn't it?

Sometimes when people use "should be", they are 99% sure, so they say "oh the Guitar Center should be right around the corner." They're pretty much saying that it is true. But sometimes, they're just making a suggestion, so they might say "That car should be parked closer to the curb."

Where I grew up, people use words like "oughta", "fixin' to", and "right fast", so it doesn't help my case.

"Should be" means a few different things,

In this case all music stores should take it upon themselves to be string recycling drop off points. It is the responsible 'green' thing to do, plus it gets musicians into your music store more often. If you have decent prices/good deals on strings you increase your likelihood of making a sale.
