Double Bass String slot width

I've been playing Spiro's on my number one bass, an old Czech, for years. Recently, I've been diggin' the feel and sound of playing guts on another bass. I'd like to try a set of Garbo's on my Czech. My question:

The string slots in the nut and bridge fit the small diameter Spiro's nicely. If I have the slots widened to accommodate the fatter Garbo's, will they be too wide for the Spiro's if I want to change back? What have youse guys who've gone back and forth between steel and gut done about this? Thanks.
