String taper question.

My Manne 5 sting is 35" scale and the B string tuner is only 1 1/8" from the nut. I need a B string that's no more than 36" from the ball end to the winding taper. Most B strings seem to be just over 37" and this puts the full diameter around the tuning post. Does anyone know of a string that's less than 37" from ball end to first taper? Cheers.

From what I've read, Warwick and perhaps Pyramid long-scale strings are...on the short side.
Try this set (I think it's relatively inexpensive in NZ dollar terms)
https://www.rockshop.co.nz/warwick-red-label-46301-nickel-5-string-bass-set-45-65-85-105-135
and verify if what I've read is true. If it is, but you don't like the set itself, look around for one from a different Warwick product line.

Hmmm. Are you sure you measured correctly? 35-inch scale plus about an inch to an inch and a quarter from the saddle back to the ball on most top load plate bridges, plus the inch or so from the nut to the tuner, is 37 and a fraction inches, or more, so regular long scale strings with the 37 - 37 1/8 winding length, such as D'Addario, should fit. Yes, companies like La Bella and Ken Smith (under contract) make or offer a 36 1/2-inch B-string, or used to, so I would respectfully suggest you remeasure your bass.

This is a Dunlop Super Bright Nickel which is 37 1/8"ball to taper.

Hey Marty,

I indirectly address the 35" conundrum in my post here as I was going more for gauge and tension. However, the scale became an immediate issue: Down the "Rabbit Hole" Alice! 6 - String Gauges (34" & 35" scale)

Short answer:

I have a Hipshot A style bridge which is similar in used string length to yours. I measured an Ernie Ball B string (including the ball) is exactly 37". So minus the ball, you should be pretty close to what you are looking for. My B string clears the backside of my nut by about 1/16", literally just barely makes it. Your bridge hook to saddle looks slightly shorter so I am guessing you will clear your nut by 1/4 -3/8".

Hope this helps.
