Could it be that shrink wrapped sets have always included string sizes ending with "5" or "0" for so long that they are now simply accepted as the de facto, or worse, never even questioned? I've found that, after publishing my company's tension chart (which involved a lot of string destruction and swearing at Excel), the majority of the musicians using it are not using it for balanced tension. They're using it or altered tunings, drop tunings, general curiosity, etc.. Balanced tension is on the bottom of the users' list.
EDIT: my go-to preference is 36 ft/lbs. In reality, even when I order singles, I end up with 35-37.
