Strings Unbalanced Up the Neck

When I'm playing chords up the neck and such, my E and A strings are much much louder than my D and G. They almost always clip and distort. I'm kinda new to bass in general so I want to know if this is normal or if there is something I can do to fix it.

It's a cheap Dean P-bass, an Edge 09 I think. It looks like a standard humbucker pickup. Idk because I got it from a friend and fixed it up a bit. I don't think it's ever gotten new strings so I might do that and see if it helps.

Can anyone point me to a reliable guide to adjusting pickup heights? I'd rather learn how to do it myself than take it somewhere.
