Stripped truss rod nut on a Oddball Fender?

Hi, I own a mid to late 80s Fender P-Bass Lyte with a stripped truss rod that’s not stripped in the conventional way, the actual threads on the nut are stripped as opposed to the Allen Key slot. Anyway, my question is, does anyone know what size truss rod nut fender used on these early models? I can’t find any information anywhere, especially since I am nearly 100% certain that mine is a prototype model which makes this search all the more difficult. If anyone has any information for me it would be a great deal of help. Thanks!

hard to see but im crossing my fingers for you that the threads on the rod itself didn't take damage from the nut stripping out. is there any trace of thread left in the nut to put a pitch gauge in it to see what the thread count is?

The inside surface of the nut is smooth besides a small portion that still has about half a thread on it. I don’t think a pitch gauge would work though, sadly. However the rod itself seems to be ok. Not sure where my pitch gauge is though or if I could get it down in there to measure, it’s a pretty tight fit.

I was thinking about the space too. I assume you would have to grind the top of the gauge to sneak it in there (the nut) bonus if the rod threads are intact,at least that's a huge relief to your issue.

On most of the single action truss rods from Fender the thread is 10-32. If there is any thread left in the nut and you can get to a hardware store they should have a thread gauge you can screw the nut on and check. Also, for 10-32 thread the rod should be 3/16” which is 0.1875”. If you can measure it with a caliper that will be a different size then 3 or 4mm.

Well it turns out I seem to have lost my gauge, I may just order a whole new nut and hope and pray it fits

Hiya,

The P-bass Lyte's were made in Japan, could the threads be metric? I've never had to repair a truss rod on a Japanese Fender so I'm in the dark however, I do own several Aria, Tokai and Matsumoku Japanese made instruments and everything on them is metric.
