Double Bass Stripping ebony paint from a maple fingerboard.

I've always personally liked the look of a yellow maple fingerboard on a double bass, most basses I've seen have ebony stained hardwood, maple, rosewood ect. fingerboards.
Now I've seen people strip the ebony paint from the fingerboards sometimes when they're restoring old basses, does anybody know how that's done without harming the wood?

Citristrip would probably work, although I think most times it's just a byproduct of planing the board

A hand cabinet scraper will do a fine job.
