Strobe vs Electronic Tuners For Inotnating.

I'm confused, most probably due to not enough coffee, but what exactly about that video is supposed to make me prefer the TT display?

To me, I'd rather see a big red "E" and red lights while on a brightly lit stage, rather than a beaming blue deathbeam that has everything on its screen written in a variety of blue.

The Petersen is still a sweet tuner. Very accurate, and it would be difficult for me to be disappointed with one.

Of course, the TT is much cheaper, more accurate, and it tracks faster, and is more rigidly built, has a smaller pedalboard footprint, etc. That's why I chose it.
 
I don't know about you but I don't tune while playing fast scales.

I was thinking of getting the Trubo-Tune but that video showed me that it's response time/sensitivity isn't necessary for normal tuning and intonation tasks, and with the StroboStomp the display is more stable when the string is in tune. Thanks for the link, it saved me the expense of getting a Turbo-Tune.

If a tuner is accurate enough to tune an instrument to play in the studio it's accurate enough to set intonation. I use either a 1st gen Peterson virtual or a TU-12H. The Peterson is very slightly more accurate but since the Boss has always tuned well enough that an instrument never sounds out of tune and I trust it to do intonation. Anyone who can hear the difference between the Peterson virtual and the TU-12 is probably going to be seriously irritated by the fact it's not possible to get 100% perfect intonation over the whole instrument.
 
the video shows how much faster the turbo tracks, that's all. (that's why i won't gig with anything else).

as for the display, you guys have it backwards.

I have never once, in @ 30 years of playing and @ 20 years of repairing, had a need for more speed in terms of tuning. While it might be faster (I've never used one), it's an improvement that is of no use to me.

No, what you did was ask why that video would make you prefer the TT over the SST. Nothing I can say would make you prefer one over the other, but I was simply stating why I prefer one over the other as a point of reference of why the video was posted.

I really don't think anyone is getting that upset over this. Both the Peterson and the Turbo Tuner will work wonderfully for any application. To each, their own.

However, the video was good in that it convinced me getting the Turbo Tune would just be a waste of money. My StroboStomp gets it done easier.

Sometimes too much speed/sensitivity is just that. The Strobostomp is good to .1 cent. I bet the display jitter on the Trubo Tune is quite a bit higher than that.

That's cool, but what I'm seeing in that video is a lot of jitter on the Strobostomp too.

Granted the guy never actually gets any of the strings in what I'd consider perfect tune but I think maybe that wasn't the purpose of the video. He showcases how the Turbo Tune can track fast playing, which is totally useless in tuning.

There's no where near as much jitter on the StroboStomp. It shows how the StroboStomp starts to stabilize as the string is tuned but the Turbo Tune just keeps jittering as it gets close and doesn't hold long enough to even determine if it's in tune or not. I can get a perfectly still display on the StroboStomp when the string is in tune and any drift is very easy to read, interpret, and therefore correct.

I was thinking of getting a Turbo Tune because of all the raves it gets but now I know the Turbo Tune's display jitter would drive me buggy. My DT-4 is only good to better than +/- 1 cent and has considrerably less jitter but it's more than sufficient for my gigs.

Re: tuner jitter / chatter....

Both my VS II and StroboStomp 2 demonstrate some quirks. The D 12th fret harmonic is especially difficult to capture while the open D is very smooth. Here's what I do to improve the string-to-string response:

*Bypass all effects including the compressor. Note: I place my tuner on top of the rack box and use the preamp tuner-out.

*Roll your blend (or v / v) to solo neck pickup while tuning. Has something to do with harmonics....I'm sure somebody more qualified can give a rational explanation as to why this works.

Sorry for any confusion but I wasn't talking about gain sensitivity rather frequency sensitivity.

What's the real difference in this case? You talking about only specific frequencies that freak the tuner out and the rest work fine?
I've tuned a lot of instruments for other people and as much as you want to argue the merits of this tuner or that there's good reason road guys use at least two (and sometimes three or four) different tuners....some instruments just aren't happy with some tuners no matter how good they are or what they cost.

The excessive Jitter could indicate it's just a bit too sensitive/quick. If the display jitter on any tuner is greater than the frequency accuracy, all that accuracy is wasted.

I'm not talking about gain sensitivity at all, that's a whole nuther ball-o-wax.

So you've tried it with a low input signal and it still jitters? Just curious for my own knowledge. The mechanical and virtual strobes I've owned are also very sensitive to harmonics. Only "jitter" problems I've ever had have been due to too much signal though. Some tuners you have to coddle more than others.
 
If you have to fine tune by ear after using a tuner, its not much of a tuner.

when you grasp that, how a string actually behaves when struck, the display will make sense as an overall picture of the complete sound, messy overtones and all. you'll be able to see how transient attack affects pitch, something regular tuners are just too slow to catch.

on a regular tuner, that green "in-tune" light or whatever that "locks on" when you're supposedly in-tune is just the tuner "giving up", saying "ok, that's as close as i can get, here's a green light for you".

on a real strobe like the turbo or a mechanical unit, the turning just gets slower the closer you get to perfect. there is no "i give up" light, and no error-margin.

with a little practice, you can determine how "perfect" you need to be for a given situation, and move on to the next string. you learn to be your own "margin-of-error", greatly speeding up tuning.

for example, on stage some slight leftover turning will still be as in-tune as a tu-2 could ever tell, and will be plenty close enough to start the next song.

for setting intonation, you can intonate to the attack, which will be not quite the same as intonating to the steady-state pitch afterwards. the attack is always a bit sharp, so intonating there will give you an overall better sound in real-world playing.

No, it is jitter caused by displaying vagaries in the string vibration. It obscures the accuracy of the tuning. If the display is jumping around there's no way to tell if it's in tune.

since those "vagaries" are in the string vibration, how is failing to account for them supposed to be more accurate, rather than less?

that's like erasing all those wiggly lines on a map, replacing them with nice straight lines, and saying the map is now more accurate!

in normal use, this is not an issue anyway. just hit the string (normally, no brushing with the thumb, turning down the tone or standing on one foot); tune until the display as a whole stops turning and you're there. it will never "freeze" because the string itself doesn't freeze. the display's shifting around in place afterwords is just from the various harmonics of the string, and is usually nothing to worry about.
So to sum up it junk to be avoided?
no, to sum it up the best thing since sliced bread :p

(seriously, everything is not for everybody of course, but after using the turbo for a few years now both on stage and on the repair bench, regular tuners just seem slow and stupid in comparison.)

My entire point is it may be too sensitive. I said that several posts ago.

How can you be certain it's precisely in tune if the display is "shifting around" as you say? It kind of defeats the purpose of all that accuracy.
