I saw the Hammster in a clinic at Birmingham's (UK) Bass Centre some years ago, just after he'd had a shave and started using the Urge. His tone was beeeeautiful, and as for his playing...
It was one of those moments when you want to console yourself by thinking, "oh sure, he's a hell of a player... but I bet the guy's a complete arsehole". Unfortunately he turned out to be one of the nicest guys I've met -- polite, friendly, happy to chat. And he reckoned I looked like Jerry Donahue's younger brother, which I can quite happily live with. Wish I could play like him too.

BTW, I'm not overkeen on Outbound either, but IMO the whole album is redeemed by Charlotte's Song which is goosebumpingly beautiful.

I'm listening to this classical stuff being played on bass - and I tell you - it must be an aquired taste if you like this stuff. I mean, it's really neat (and incredible) that he can pull this off, but the bass certainly isn't the most pleasing sounding instrument for playing this type of music!

Sure it sounds better on piano. Stuff written for piano often sounds best on piano. It's more of a show off thing. Instead of giving our hero the thumbs down sign don't listen to it.

The funny thing about that piece is that Debussy never intended it to be taken seriously - it's his parody of right-hand piano exercises.
