I'm trying to decide what to buy for "general purpose" use (practicing bass, digitial piano and guitar; home and studio recording; etc) and these three seem to be the most popular.

Which would you go for (or which have I overlooked)? I'd really prefer to stay sub-£100, so no super-mega-fancy-phones suggestions please ;-)

I know there's plenty on this subject, but would like to poll the results so it's clear which the winner is.

i voted for the Sennheiser HD280s cuz i have them for general listening purposes. they're good headphones, but they lack a little low end. it shouldn't be a problem doing bass specific stuff, but when it's sitting in a mix you might have to boost the bass a little.

i also second Sonys. i have a pair of MDR V900s i'm using right now. awesome headphones as well.

A lot of people use/like the sony's (especially the 7506's). I've had a couple pair including v600's and 7506's... I found the bass of both to be too hyped for my taste. Actually blew out my 600's after a couple years. I prefer flatter sounding stuff. I have Senn 600's which are fantastic, but they are open back, so they aren't ideal for all studio situations. I have used the Senn 280's before too, and thought they sounded pretty good as well.

Are you joking or something? I recently got some Sennheiser HD280 pros, and the bass is awesome! No need to boost bass with them! I absolutely love these headphones, they're the best pair I ever had. They also are really comfortable, and they have good isolation too.

Maybe mine are a newer version or something, because I can't see how anyone would think they don't get enough bass.

Any of these are going to be fine, just personal preference really. I have the K240S and they work well for me - wish they were slightly more sensitive though as they don't get real loud with my mp3 player. Great for everything else.

I just picked up the AKG K240 S today. I had a chance to demo some good phones at a pro audio shop and I also tried the Sony 7506, Sennheiser 280, a $90 Ultrasone, and a couple others. For me there was no comparison--the AKGs had the most bass and a certain silkiness and "togetherness" throughout their range that the others couldn't match. They reminded me of a good set of speakers whereas all the others sounded like headphones.

The AKGs were the least efficient of the bunch, but my iPod can drive them to painful levels. I've also noticed that lower-efficiency bass cabs tend to sound smoother and less peaky than super efficient cabs. Just my .02. took the AKGs home and plugged them into my studio/practice rig (Soundcraft Compact 10 console). Wow! Never heard my basses sound so good in cans before.
