Stupid graphics card...

I have an Nvidia GeForce4 Ti 4800 SE. I can't use the Vista Aero! :'( Out of curiosity: right now it says my version of Vista is the 32bit. When I upgrade my graphics card (which was a long time coming anyway. This was just the final push I guess) will it go up to a 64bit version once I get it installed? I really want Aero. The plain version just looks so... plain. :eyebrow:

Go Vista! Btw to all the naysayers out there I love Vista. It's not a huge improvement over XP, but its enough to make me switch. And if this is what everyone and their brother will be using in 3 years then I'm perfectly fine with that.

Please, lets keep this discussion Mac-free. Nothing wrong with Macs, but we need not argue. You stick with yourn and I'll stick with mine.

when i used that "scan to see if your machine can handle Vista" tool, it told me my card would not support Vista. i have the 4200 version of your card, i don't think your specs are that much higher than mine, so i can see why it might not work.

also, you need a 64bit machine to use the 64bit version.

... dammit. So my Intel Pentium 4 won't cut it I guess. It's a 2.8ghz tho. Grr.

So can I buy a new CPU and put it on my motherboard after I take the other one off? or do I have to get a whole new motherboard? I'm not good with computer innards.

Apparantly I was. I thought that was what they meant. But I guess not. Because I know my graphics card can handle it. It's old and stuff but its not horrible. It should be able to handle the Aero.

It is unlikely that your motherboard will work with a new 64 bit Intel processor as the new ones use the LGA775 socket which was introduced with later model Pentium 4s. It'd be easy for you to check though. Even if it is the correct socket there may be some issues since the Core 2 requires a different voltage than the P4s. You might be able to get a used 64 bit P4 that would work with your motherboard if you have a socket 775 motherboard.

Duo: i might have nvidia driver that might work... let me upload it to server... i know that my video card (5700) is not supported by new drivers but the version before this supported it just fine. They just took it out... :(

Uploading to a server right now... will PM you when done... hopefully it will help...

It's weird that i keep these drivers around, i haven't used windows in like a month+ yet i still have this... It's only 1 version before the what they got today... I really don't like what MS/Nvidia is doing with this "cant support the card". I think it's up to consumer to figure out how fast or slow he wants OS to work, and 4200 should work just fine with vista. Pretty dirty of them...
