Hey guys!

I recently bought an Ampeg svt-410he cab 500 watt @ 8 ohm. I'm currently searching for a matching amp head. I'm playing in my bedroom so I can't make a hell lot of noise, but me and my friends are trying to form a band. I mostly play Grunge, and i don't want to spend more than 600-700 dollar
Current option: Orange terror bass 500 --> any thoughts on this one?

Do you have any suggestions?

Wow, that's a lot of speaker for a bedroom and a newly forming band. At $700 you can buy a lot of amp to go with it, and there are a lot of good options available. Given that you can afford a lot more amp than you need now, I think you should look for something that will last for the long term and hold its value well in case you want to get something else in the future. Looking at my preferred brand, Mesa Boogie, there are several options you could buy used for around $700 or less: Buster 200, M3 Carbine, or M-Pulse 360.

Great choice on the 4X10. You're covered for a good majority of situations (as long as you go with good a good wattage head). And good choice on going with 8 ohms.

My advice would be to find a Gallien-Krueger 700Rbii, or a 1001RBii. The difference is the 700RBii has 500 watts, and then 1001RBii has 700. The 1001s are usually in the classifieds in the $450-550 range. These amps are used by a lot of the metal guys. They're rock solid, give a good gritty tone if needed, and sound great with a simple grit pedal in front of it if you need more. My main setup for a good while was simply a Sansamp RBI into my 1001RBii.
Right now, I've moved up to a GK MB800 Fusion and my tone comes from a Darkglass B7K pedal.

Next piece of advice, I would go as HIGH in the wattage as you can afford. You want to save yourself any issues down the road. If your friends are playing with combo amps, you'll be fine. But when they get to half stacks, you'll be competing with 100 watt heads. 1 is enough. Competing with 2 means you'll have to really dial in your eq to push through the mix. But you've got the capability of adding another cab to compete if necessary.
Aim for 3X the wattage that your guitarists are pushing. To compete with a 100 watt half stack, the rule of thumb would mean you'd need about 300 watts to be relevant.
This is why I suggest going as high on the wattage as you can afford. If you get a 500 watt head, you're 500watts if you're at 4 ohms. If you're only connected through one cab @ 8ohms, it's going to only push about 300-350 watts.

So to sum up, my advice is to 1) Go as high in the wattage as you can afford, 2) I'd highly suggest a GK 700/1001, 3) think about what you plan on doing with this band. The 4X10 is a great choice, you've got options to simply add another cab if you really want (to take full advantage of all of the wattage @ 4 ohms.)

Tone Hammer 500.

BTW, that Ampeg cabinet is probably really more like 200 watts handling realistically, IIRC.
Nope, that's a pretty accurate power handling rating. The Classic cabs aren't rated thermal (when the voice coils blow), but displacement limited (when the speakers start to distort). So when they say it handles 500w, that's before fartout. Thermal they're rated for 1000w.

I would pair it up with a PF800. 400w into an 8 ohm cab, which is plenty for a 410, plus you have the option of adding another 410he down the line, and then you get 800w. And you'll probably be able to find them for a good bit less than $600 during next weekend's sales.

I have a Markbass Little Mark Tube 800 and I really like it. It has a lot of tone control options and it puts out a ton of power while weighing in around 6 or 7 pounds. You can carry it in a shoulder bag to and from gigs while other bassists lug around giant tube heads that weigh 80lbs.

It puts out 800w @4ohms and 500w @8ohms which also would work well with your cab considering it matches its power handling now and if you ever got another one you could stack it and get 400w out of two cabs.

I got mine used for ~$450 which is also in your price range. Check it out! I really dig my Markbass gear. Maybe go to a Guitar Center and plug into one and see for yourself.

Thanks for replying!
My nephew is the bass player for Oathbreaker and I had the opportunity to buy his 410 cab. I want to invest in a bass amp head that i can use for a longer period of time
Btw, I live in Belgium so it's more expensive to buy things from the US. I don't know if the sales would make any difference. The prices in Europe seem to be much higher
I have a few options to buy second hand:
- GK fusion 550 (~600€)
- ampeg portaflex 500 (~300€)
- ampeg svt 450 (~400€)
- ampeg svt-3 pro (~800€) --> it's a bit too expensive, but i can try to lower the price

- Orange terror bass 500, but i would be obligated to buy it new

What do you guys think?
