Suggest an overdrive for flats on a P?

What's a good overdrive pedal for a P bass with flats? I've been jamming some fuzzy psychedelic droney kinda stuff with the guys at work and I can't get what I want out of the big muff or the MXR el grande. I need something that has a little more definition. Everything I try just sounds muddy and flabby.

Depending on what you need - there are a bunch of very well liked offerings from tech 21 - eg this kinda thing:

That can add some non - fuzz filth to a tone - otherwise you can go down the tube OD route - or not.

There are a lot of options. Do you have a specific tone in mind? a few reference points will help!

Also budget. Some pedals are very pricey, some not so much.

Yeah actually, nothing in this thread is an OD.

+1 lol

If you have a decent budget then without a doubt the darkglass B3K. Just got mine last week and it's exactly what I've been looking for.

If your budget is a little tighter then that then I suggest a pigtronix fat drive. It's good with active bass and GREAT with passive bass. It can go from subtle overdrive to crazy gain-driven distortion. Extremely versitile.

Good luck with the the OD search, It took me a while to find ones I liked with flats. When you do its magic.

I know it's not an overdrive, but I love the way my MicroPOG fattens up my P strung with Chromes.

Yeah actually, nothing in this thread is an OD.

So, I actually think this is a fair recommendation... i play a p-bass and have found that the pog CAN give it more growl with the sub and +1 at more subtle settings.

That being said, it isn't an OD, and I do not use flats, i use stainless roundwound, so there is a fair amount of aggressive-ish tones happening. But IME with overdrives, i loved the Fulltone OCD and Crowther HotCake, but I can't go past the Fuzzrocious Rat Tail, which is a distortion, but can be used as an OD very easily. My only regret is not getting the dual rat tail !!

As noted before, I think you are looking for a fuzz pedal not an overdrive.

I would consider a Swollen Pickle or a Wolly Mammoth or even a Mastotron.
If you want to stay withh a Muff type pedal, a Stomp under Foot Civil War or Dirty Rooster should do the trick.

I have tested all of these with flats and they sound great.

I'm lovin the sound of my P strung with TI jazz flats run into a Phat Phuk B with the internal trimpot set to the point of overdrive. It sounds really awesome, completely dirty, lots of low end and a real hairy, vintage kinda vibe.
