Suggestions for a new cab

Hi there!
I’ll be needing a new cab.
I’ve tried and liked a Gallien-Krueger Neo 2x10, but it’s a little over my budget and I really don’t need all that much power handling for my application. The sound was great to my ears, though.

I have a tendency to prefer 10 inch speakers, but I remain open to other suggestions, because the size of a speaker doesn’t always do everything.

Budget would be $700 and lower, new (I have no patience for hunting used gear). Lightweight and rather smallish.

It not all about the wattage, it efficiency is a huge part as well. I’ve also found that cabs sound better when not working at their maximum rating.

There are a lot of cabs that fit your qualifications at GuitarCenter.com used gear. They come with a 30 day money back satisfaction guarantee. You will have to do some research downloading cab specs.

Well, I'll do your used gear hunting for you - can't do better than this. At 25 lbs, compact and can handle anything you need. I had one for years,

I use a pair of RevSound 112s instead.

I sse you are from Montreal, are you talking of 700 USD?

You've got many options, even if you want a lightweight 210 for that max budget:
- Several Markbass 102 models, some under 10kg. MB58R 102 Energy Box 8 (9.8 kg) - $588
- Ampeg SVT-210AV (15 kg) - $322
- Warwick Gnome Pro CAB 2/10/4 (16.6 kg) - $269
- Hartke HyDrive HD210 (16.6 kg) - $481

I would also open to 1x12 cabs
In France, Guitar Sound Systems makes a very compact and lightweight 1x12 (8 kg) - 470 €

Yup, USD. I like to “translate” my budget in USD to make it easier for most users here.

I think I should try 1x12s too, I don’t know that brand, I’ll take a look!

I've always liked GK, but I'd check out used Genzler or older Genz Benz cabs. Definitely can find them in that price range. I bought a Genzler 2x12 on Talkbass in that vicinity about 2 months ago from @davedamage. The Genz Benz stuff is just as good as the newer stuff, just a little heavier. @Jeff Genzler

There's no "10 inch" specific sound, it depends on each speaker and cab.
Long ago (in the 80's), people used to think that 10" drivers were sounding tight, and 15" drivers sounded deep.
It's no longer true (if it ever was). Cabs and drivers sound the way they are designed to sound, no matter the driver size.

I've got a example to proove it: Barefaced 10 inch cabs sound "warm fat coloured", while their 12 inch cabs sound uncolored.
Jad Freer cabs are designed the opposite way, with their 10 inch cabs (flat response) and their 12 inch cabs (fat and colored)

Sweetwater presently has new G.K. Neo 210 IV cabinets listed at $949.00.

Since you've already tried and thought it was great a G.K. Neo 210 (IV ?) cabinet...and your already planning to spend $700.00...why not save up an additional $250.00 and buy a brand new cabinet that you already know you like.

You used the words, "new, lightweight, smallish". In today's bass cab market that equals a higher price.
As per not needing the power handling for your present application, whose to say you might wish you had that higher power handling for future applications.

You've already found a cab your ears approve of, (and that's half the battle.)
The old adage: "Buy once, cry once" applies here.

Based on budget and needs I would go with my personal favorite cab after factoring in tone, form factor, weight, etc.. Genzler Bass Array 10-2-SERIES 2
I have 3 of them but typically use one or 2 driven by either Genzler Magellan 350 or Mesa Boogie WD-800. I've never been happier with my tone, the ease of schlepping my gear, and the modular nature of the rig. I know you mentioned you don't want to hunt & peck the used market however, you can sometimes find these pop up on Reverb or online dealers as used / b stock for like $500.

Great set-up!
Hopefully, in the next couple of weeks, I'll be gigging a brand new Kinetix 800 too.

Then, (depending on how well the Kinetix mates-up with my present gigging cabinets), I maybe seriously considering two of those 110 Array cabs.

I'd drop G.K. a e-mail and ask about the voicing differences.

I've a friend who has the CX115 cabinet, I've not heard the CX210 or the CX410 versions.

I heard him play a small restaurant job with a moderately loud, 4 pcs., country, country/rock group. No FOH support. He was powering the CX115 cab with a G.K. MB500 head.

To my ears, from roughfully 30' directly in front of the cab, the CX115 sounded good.

Prior to the CX he gigged a Rumble 115 cab for a very short time and then went to the CX115 for a year or so.
He sold the Rumble cab, has parked the CX cab where his band has rehearsals and now gigs a Mesa Subway 115 cabinet, he's still using the G.K. head.
