Suggestions for Beginner?

I was in the same boat as a long time guitar player transitioning to bass. While I did not drop a chunk on my first two basses, I did find plenty of used amp choices. So far for practice and low volume jams I use a $50 Peavey Basic 112. It will get surprisingly loud and will hold its own with unmixed drums in a smaller room. Louder requirements get my GK 400 RB IV I picked up for $80 hooked up to a run of the mill PV 410 cab. As others have stated: plenty of inexpensive (sub $200) sound gear out there.
