"Suhr era"?

I see the phrase used in the classifieds, but what does it really mean? The era when John Suhr worked at Fender and may have walked by your bass as it was being built? Sure (sic) he was involved in some designs, but unless you purchased a Masterbuilt from the Custom Shop, does "Suhr Era" really mean much?

I also would like to know whats so special about these. I’ve repeatedly heard that Fender started to "get good again" in about 2008, so it seems like maybe a marketing term to move an old bass. Kinda like when people say "RARE!” (Facepalms)

Many people love the Suhr era preamps and pickups of the Deluxe series.

They had unique pickups and a killer preamp that were both designed by John Suhr. The bodies on the Deluxe model were slightly smaller as well. You have the years wrong. The Suhr electronics were first used I believe in 96. I own a 97 model. They continued to make that same model but changed the electronics after Suhr left Fender. The Suhr designed models also had graphite rods in the necks and just more refinement that prior models.

Suhr designed the pickups and preamps used in the American deluxe models. The pickups has one pole per string (instead of 2) and the preamps were different fe standard fender deluxes as well. Lastly the bodies were a little smaller, it was a completely different American deluxe than earlier or after. Because of this they are highly coveted and identified as “suhr era”. It has nothing to do with suhr touching a bass or crafting it.
