Double Bass Summer Camp

I'm starting to look into some possible camp this summer. So far I've checked into Aspen, Interlochen, Eastern Music Festival, and Tanglewood. I'm a senior in high school, so I'll be off to college next year (this would be my last year for Interlochen if I should do it). If anyone has any opinions or advice, let me know.

I went to Aspen twice when I was in high school. It's a really nice place. Big festival and lots of people, but the bass program is pretty good. You get a lesson once a week, and there is typically a bass masterclass once a week. Edgar Meyer usually gives at least one class. You can have as much free time or be as busy as you like. There's usually at least one or two concerts a day, which all students have free tickets to. Public transportation in town is free, so going downtown is very easy.

Not the easiest place to be accepted to, but it's big enough (25+ bass players) that it's not impossible for a younger bassist to get in.

Paul (or anyone who has been to Aspen),

whom did you study with and what were your experiences with them? I'm curious about all of the teachers since I have little experience with any of them outside of knowing who they are and where they teach and play.

Thanks very much.

The first year I went, I worked with Chris Hanulik and Eugene Levinson. The second year, I worked with Bruce Bransby.

Hanulik and Bransby are both very good excerpt coaches. They both pull very heavy sounds and can walk you through nearly any excerpt you like. My experience with Levinson was brief, and I don't recall much of it. At the time, his book "The School of Agility" had just been released, so we spent most of our time talking about that. My sense was that he is a teacher who has his own method, and if you want to study it seriously you need to have more than just a couple lessons.
