So after doing many a mod to my own basses, I wanted to take on a guitar. (blasphemy I know) So after talking to my guitarist, who plays his tried and true Gibson Les Paul, and only the Les Paul, I convinced him to let me revamp his Squire Strat. Here's the basic plan
Matching black headstock
Schaller locking Tuners [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]
Wilkinson/Gotoh VS100N Tremolo Invalid Link Removed
Paisley pickguard Invalid Link Removed
And new electronics, with an added kill switch.
The key here is I want to try winding my own pickups for this guitar. I have a good sense of electronics and having read several books and been wandering around talkbass for quite some time, I think I'm ready to try making my own pickups. However I really want to try something new. I would like to use neodymium rods as opposed to alnico or ceramic. I've used neo magnets in all kinds of projects and they are just so cool. I'm wondering though if I could make pickups with them. I know I've read something about this being attempted, so it comes down to two questions:
1) Where can I get these magnets in the appropriate size for the pickups? I'm doing 70's style pickups so they won't be stacked in height, just all the same.
2) Would this even work? I know that neodymium magnets are incredibly powerful, so I'm just wondering how the physics of everything will work.
