I'd bought a set of 40-100s a while ago but with one thing and another had not got round to putting them on (Jazz Bass). Wow, very nice! Now I have to balance up whether the $45 is justifiable against the competitors of Dunlop 40-100 ($30) or Rotosound SM66N ($25). Thom rounds have their place too, but are much more mid-focused and less immediately rich than the DRs but then they are $65 a pop.

Sunbeams

Just slaped some Sunbeams (45 - 100) on my P/J and am about to go to rehearsal. First impression playing for 5 or 10 mins after I just put them on is that I think I am going to like them after they are broken in. I don't really like the sound of brand new strings so I am reserving all judgement. I had an odd gauge on there before... Close to the same guage but probably hex-core. Does that mean more tension (and less with round-core)? I may need to give the truss a little turn but I'll check that tomorrow.
Really? The sunbeams have more warmth than brightness to my ears. Loved em at rehearsal tonight. Had to dial the compressor input down, they have good output!

SuperBrights sound nothing like Sunbeams though. Maybe a bit more once they die down, they're only similar in tension and feel.
I'm in the UK too and I use an eBay seller called BassSpecialities to get my Sunbeams; £19 inc. postage with no customs too.
Ok I have finally done it, I have installed the Sunbeam strings on my Fender American Standard bass. Here are my observations.
1. The round core is much quieter than the hex core.. The fret sound is greatly reduced which is a plus for studio and live.
2. The round core is easier on your fingers and more comfortable to play.
3. There is like a nice rich baritone voicing on the strings which I really like. The DAddario of course have this in your face bright metallic sound. I have to admit I like the DR strings better.
4. The strings do move a little more up-down compared to the DAdarrio strings which allow you to get more vibrato if you want to. I don't find the movement a problem or distraction when jamming on the bass for 30 min. I will let you know more about this after a month.
5. The bass strings seem punchier as well.
6. The price for DR strings cost a little more over the DAddario strings.
These strings are a keeper. I really like the sound and feel of the strings. I will be interested in seeing how they sound after they are played on for a while. But at this time, I will be ordering another pack of DR Sunbeams.

I have gone to dr strings after decades of playing Daddario, i like highbeams on my gibson and the pure blues on my birdsong & fender!
