UGH they both look so good to me, but one's gotta look better than the other by TB??

Tort with a rosewood neck and black with maple. Maple and tort looks bad, and black and rosewood can look cheap.

However... the bass with the bound and block'd neck up there does look classy, and even a cheap white pickguard can be made to look classy if you add a tug bar. I even like the additional 'Geddy' pickguard screw fitted between the strings on '70s Jazz basses. There are ways and means of making any combination not look cheap.

Also, not all tort is created equal. Some can be very red, some very brown. Some can be very busy and some can appear flat and boring. Fender Japan used some weird crimson red material on their older '60s reissues, whereas my old MIJ Mustang bass had a very dark, boring tort pickguard.
