Sunn Concert 215 cab speaker content

just got a Sunn 215S cab a buddy was going to throw away.
It only has one speaker in it. Was wondering if anyone knew what brand of speak this is?
The tag on the back of the cab says it had Sunn Transducersa 4Ω @ 160 rms. ser# C-016182

Was thinking of just buying a matching speak to whatever is already in there. I know a lot of people really like the old JBL K&D 140Fs, but of course JBL doesn’t make them anymore. I see they show up on EBay, but being as they are 1970s speakers not sure I want to buy them as they may be re-coned. If not they are getting really really old.

If I can’t match the existing speaker was wondering if someone could recommend a viable modern substitute. Maybe a model of Eminence - which seem fairly reasonably priced.

Do have an old Concert and a 200s heads for this cab. Sold my 200s cab with Cerwin-Vega back in the 80s.

I had the same style of Sunn cab as you. Here's the drivers that came in it.

Your speaker has a 1098 code. That's a Pyle speaker. I'm almost certain it's not original.

I would toss a pair of Peavey BW 1505's or EVM 15b's in there. Probably forgiving enough to sound good.

You could get those with JBL's in them. Not sure which model though. D140???

I was going to say that it doesn't look old enough in terms of both wear and design to be an original speaker, but Nashvillebill covered it better.
Go with your gut and put a pair of Eminence in your Sunn.

No. These are not the original speakers that came in these cabs. Back then you had the option of JBL D140Fs, EVs, Sunn Transducers, or my 200s cab came loaded with Cerwin-Vegas.

None of these speakers are manufactured anymore, unfortunately. There are JBLs and EVs for sale on EBay, but a lot of these are re-cones. I'm not sure I would even want to buy these kinds of speakers because they were made in the 70/80s which means even in good condition they are old.

Thanks NashvilleBill for figuring out the brand of speaker in this cab. Looks like Pyle doesn't manufacture production replacement speakers anymore. Mostly DJ and car audio.

If anyone knew of a reasonably priced (read:cheap!) modern speaker that came close to the old style vibe similar to JBLs or EVs, I would apreciate any advice/opinions. It looks like Eminence has quite a variety to choose from. Need a beefy 300w @ 8Ω, I'm thinking'....

An Eminence Beta 15A would meet that need, as would their Neo 15. I've used both, they're good sounding replacements. Check US Speaker's website for good pricing.

Those are nice sounding cabs-I had the Yamaha clone and it was amazing, rode it hard for almost 15 years.

No. These are not the original speakers that came in these cabs. Back then you had the option of JBL D140Fs, EVs, Sunn Transducers, or my 200s cab came loaded with Cerwin-Vegas.

That's a 1971 to 1974 Sunn 215S, 215M or 215V cab, which replaced the 200S and Sorado bass cabs. The only speaker options were Sunn Transducer (215S), Sunn Magna (215M) or Cerwin Vega (215V). The cabs themselves were identical, except for the ID plate on the back which carried the above mentioned model designation based on the drivers that the cab came loaded with. There was also the "115" version of all three available.
The 200S was OEM with D140F's, and Sunn had stopped offering JBL drivers (and the 200S) when Hartzell bought the company in 1971.

These will make that cab slam. Be about as loud as an 810, but deeper and with good definition/projection.

For something more affordable Eminence Betas sound darn good for bass guitar and work in most any enclosure . Good Xmax and very good mids and decent low end .

I have a 215S and am pretty sure one of the speakers is shot. I am thinking of replacing them but im looking for more lows than a mid range punch sound. I was actually ok with the original sound of this thing. any ideas/suggestions? also, ill post photos of the existing speakers incase someone knows what they are too.
