Suprises in pop music

I saw their gig from tv at the time they were on the top. David played a quite nice slap solo on one of the songs, might have been 'step by step'.

Recently I was surpriced by the bass player with destiny's child on their live performances.

The last time i dug any new hit band it was Maroon5. Nothing fancy, just good tight groove. Doesn't sound like a good live band though.

I've only heard like 2 of thier songs. Each one though, was greatly different. The poppy one, "This Love" and the one I heard over the weekend, (forget the name) were totallly different styles. This one was more rockish and sounded a great deal different vocally than "This Love."

They really supprised me with the divercity they have.

They do sound very pro-tooled on the record so thats why I doubted their live performance ability at the first place. Too bad I was right.

If my ears are right, 'this love' has synth bass... but it has great groove.

BTW, the greatest thing, to me anyway, was me discovering Brit pop/funk in the '80's. With bands like Level 42, Kajagoogoo, Culture Club, General Public, etc. To this day, I still think that that was some of the best bass playing in pop.

"Toxic" by brittany spears - i hate that music but that has a cool bass line i cant stop humming that stupid song :rolleyes:

also, all of matthew sweet's "girlfriend" album
nothing fancy, all played by mr sweet himself but all right on the money and with a hell of a tone

Let's see... someone mentioned John Mayer. Dave LaBruyere is a great, tight player, he plays just the right amount, IMO. It's not the kind of gig where one can show off chops, but he still manages to sound great, in a tasteful way.

A few other random things that caught my attention: that song "Invisible", performed by Clay Aiken, the American Idol winner... while it is without a doubt overproduced, and has creepy, stalker-ish sounding lyrics, musically it is a very well written and arranged song, and the bass playing on it is absolutely perfect. Also, the song Dashboard Confessional wrote for the Spiderman soundtrack has some of the best bass tone I've heard in a long time, I wonder how they were able to pull that off so well... very full sound.

I know it's not technically 'popular' music but a lot of great bass work is coming out of house, especially deep house music. Listen to anything from the naked music label, which is co-owned I believe by Aguilar's Dave Boonshoft. A good example is Miguel Migs' Nude Tempo disc. Also, anything by Masters at Work kills.
