My candidate is American Pie. Most people think it's just roots, but it's a nice melodic line.

"I Got a Name" by Jim Croce has a beautiful bass line.

There are many '70's songs that may fit this (America, Carpenters, Carley Simon, Carole King, James Taylor, etc....) It appears that bass players were allowed to actually play and create melodic lines in pop and rock songs back then.

That sounds like a fun music research quest. I don't have a ton of some of that stuff, but I SHOULD.

A lot of the Price Is Right music cues from the 70s have awesome bass lines. This is the intermission song they use on TPIR Roku channel. The bass line blew me away, I had to find what it was.

Reading some of the comments, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was posted here before.

No doubt, "It's my life" has this dynamic and energetic bass line that propels the song, without over powering it. Also has good takes on unusual harmonisation/key changes (for rock).
"Black velvet" is another one, though played on keyboard.

I love that show. I work from home and I always watch it on the Gameshow Network while I’m eating lunch. Makes me feel like I’m home from school back when I was a kid in the 70’s!
