Is the Neptunium worth having just in a 1/4” signal chain? Or is the magic solely in the XLR out?

Good question - certainly, the 1/4" signal chain will be better for it but I suppose it depends on where you are? If it's a gig where there's still a DI need to front of house (either another house box or they use a pre-EQ DI from the amp) then I would say yes - the output from the 1/4" is near identical to the ear as the XLR - certainly in a gig environment.

But if you're playing just the amp - either on it's own or miked, then I'd say you may be better with something more like a regular pre-amp, so you have more options to play with. Possibly something like the Slampegg, Elementary or Underground Accelerator?

(I suggest those three, but I've never played them - it's just what I would be thinking of doing).

Unless , of course, your amp has a value preamp - then you're already sorted.

If you don't need the DI, like you're going to just DI from your head, then get a More if all you need is the 1/4" path.

No idea but I doubt it. It has its own buffer in V3.

More: input -> tube gain stage (2 in parallel) -> tube output buffer (2 in parallel)

Finally v3: input -> HPF -> tube gain stage -> tube gain stage -> FET output buffer

The only difference is that Finally v3 will have the HPF on the front end and the FET output buffer and the UA will not have either. Otherwise identical.

Weighing in as a huge fan of the Underground Accelerator. Not a di(no out) but it's an ideal tone shaper for me. I'm told it's based off the Alembic FX-1 preamp and the Fender tone stack. It gets really dirty but I just use it as not other "non overdriven" tone. It's the best!

Same here! I always have a DI on my amp usually on my pedal board. For pure tone shaping, the Underground Accelerator is ideal for me. It gives some heaviness and girth to the tone, but doesn't make it muffled or blurry. Rather than bake tone into the DI, I like to separate tube tone into a it's own pedal and then DI as and where needed. I always have a passive Radial JDI in my bag if I don't have any other DI in my chain.

100% I really like the DI on my Magellan800 so that's my di option when I need to. Great description of the UA, I'm trying to spread the word of how great it is!

Between the Neptunium and Finally V3, which will give more (audibly) clean tubey fatness (with/without eq)? And is there a noticeable loss of highs from the FInally (for slap)?

To my ears there‘s added overtones / harmonics with the Finally, which I love! No loss of highs.

this seems as good as place as any to post my query as i'm considering adding one of a finally, neptunium or bassrig64 to my board.

i'm new to pedals (so please excuse my ignorance) and have recently purchased two origin effects pedals: a calif76 and a DCX overdrive.

i use passive basses through a fender ACB50. i keep the calif76 pedal on and use the DCX on a couple of songs for drive.

i'm still only rehearsing with a band at the moment but it's likely that we will start gigging later in the year.

firstly, do i even need to add one of those pedals to my board or will i be better served using the ACB50's DI?

if adding one of the pedals is the best solution, which one (or alternative) would posters recommend for my setup? i like classic 60s tones and play with fingers and pick.

Honestly, if you're running a nice tube amp like all the time and you like the sound I'd hesitate to say that you need any of them. You're probably well suited just using the DI on the amp. When I played out with my previous rigs (SWR Super Redhead, or an Eden WT550) that's always what I'd used. I even used the WT550 standalone when recording because I liked the tone.

If you're starting to find yourself often in situations where you're not able to use your amp that's when I'd start looking at one of these options. In that case I'd look at your EQ needs and deciding how to solve that before getting one of these. I think the only thing to watch out for on the BassRigs is that they have a non-switchable cabsim on the XLR out.

Looks like your amps DI is after the power tubes too. You probably want that signal if you’re happy with the sound through the amp.

certainly happy with the sound of the acb50 so will use the DI on that and see how it goes!
