Hey guys. I've recently got into the all-tube SVT world, after buying an almost mint SVT-CL. That was after almost getting an MTI-era SVT. I say Almost because some weathy guy from Italy offered about 1800 dollars for it, PLUS shipping. Way too much. I'm from Mexico, and although there are some vintage ampegs in varying conditions and VERY cheap (my bandmate just got a VT-22 that sounded great after major servicing), they're rare after all, you just don't find 'em that often. I read about the 70's SVT amps and most people seem to see them as the bomb, loud as ****, scary, thunderous godzilla-like things. And lots of people see the CL's as next to crap. I tend to favor some vintage amps, (from my experience as a guitarist), and see some upgrades (like tubes) as very positive, but I also find that LOTS of differences people rave about in the amplifier world are there, but they're also very subtle and almost inaudible in a band situation, and you can make modern amps kick ass with some nice tubes and practice with your instrument.
What do you think about the SVT-CL ? Is there anyone who has heard both new and vintage SVT's together? Do you think they're getting too much crap? I'm starting to think this model is being misjudged. I'm not trying to start controversy, just have some opinions. My only complaints with it are:
1. The protection circuitry that shuts off the amp under some conditions. It can ruin your show, but you shouldn't run your gear on crappy power supplies, anyway.
2. The thing about I didn't found the amp THAT loud. Run it with the 810E, my jazz bass, and I mean, is in the big ass league, shakes my house but not in the way i thought, or the way some people describes SVT's. Maybe this is because i'm probably going deaf, or because I play in a loud band and I'm pretty used to big gear.
My only experience with bass and old ampegs is with a V-2 and the original 4x12" cab. It was great, specially for guitar, and i found it kind of cool for bass when used right, but it wasn't THAAAT out of this world. It obviously lacked some power and distorted all the time, and the owner putting an active bass in front of it (For God's Sake), did nothing to help that. He (slapper/funky/tweeter lover kind of player) hated it, became frustrated, and sold the whole thing for almost nothing (like 700 dollars) because he was broke and desperately in need for something smaller and more "focused". I guess a heavy-rock/stoner kind of guy would have another impression of it and would love it for rehearsals.
Thanks !!
