SVT-CL. Is it THAT bad ?

I just picked up a VR and I like the sound a lot better than the Classics. The classic tone wasn't that much better/different to me than a good solid state head. Not worth the weight and the expense and the tube maintenance.

The VR sounds good enough (different enough from my SS stuff) to put up with all that. It sounds huge...

three 12AX7's + two 12AU7's + six 6550 tubes = good solid state tone.



Isn't this the same tube compliment Ampeg has used for many different SVTs over the years?

I wouldn't be surprised if they actually were. I bet he went right into the PA and the CLs were just stage props.

A more plausible explanation is that the tracks were pre-recorded. Two SVT's aren't enough to qualify as stage props.

I love my CL.

I used to have the 8x10e cabinet with it. Then I got a Schroeder 310212 cab...the amp was much louder with the Schroeder cab than the Ampeg cab. Not that the 8x10 was quiet by any means, just the Schroeder was noticably louder.

They were. The rhythm and backing vocal tracks were pre-recorded. The only things that weren't were the lead guitar and Petty's vocal during the verses.
