Well, one reason would be to sound good in the mix rather than to just be an overbearing wanker that makes the entire band sound bad so they can be the center of attention.

When I use my 71 or 73 SVT heads, I run the bass through a DI box first to split the signal. With my SVT-II heads I simply use their DI outs. Good point made about keeping stage volume down. I have plenty of SVT heads and 8x10 cabs and could create ear-splitting volume, but I know that if I exceeded a reasonable stage volume, the FOH sound would be terrible and the whole band would suffer. Use the PA, it is your friend.
