SVT-VR: The Definitive Thread

Thanks to TBer "sedan dad" I noticed the VR is up on the new Ampeg site.
I could not help but notice that the VR is 23 lbs. heavier than the CL.
Why would I be excited? Because IME the heavier the better!
Also I couldn't help notice the AV is missing from the lineup. Several of us predicted that possibility.
For those of you with sharp memories you might remember the VR's Harmony Central "Review" that I found suspect and that sorta became controversial here for a brief moment. The thread which introduced the "review" to us here at TB has since disappeared but the most curious and interesting portion of the review, to me, had nothing to do with the head but rather the speaker cabinet and was described thusly:
"What surprised me is that it also comes with a 70' 810 cabinet which is entirely straight, no angles on the back, towel pole to cary it arround. But iw comes with a set of 4 casters as the original one."
If anyone can locate it on the new Ampeg site please link.

As far as I know there is no "comes with" about it..... You buy a cab or you buy a head or both or neither...
Now as to what a particular dealer might do, that is something else.

I was at a store today and they had the VR on top of a matching cab, but I'm guessing that it was just the AV 8x10 because it had an angled back with a towel bar.

Okay I'm super lazy and gave up reading posts so here's some silly questions:
There's 2 channels, the second having a simple 2 band EQ section.
1) CAN YOU FOOTWITCH BETWEEN THE TWO OR IS IT TO BE USED WITH TWO BASSES?
2) ARE THE EQ POINTS ON THE BASS & TREBLE CONTROLS DIFFERENT ON CH.2 ??
3) SAME TUBE COMPLIMENT AS THE CL AND AV, IS THE SECOND CHANNEL AND THE COSMETICS WORTH THE XTRA $500.....
4) SAME QUESTION, EVEN IF ITS MADE IN VIETNAM......?!?

I don't believe you can switch channels via footswitch, because there are inputs for each (two actually). I didn't really like the tone I heard out of this thing, and I didn't like that it only had a volume and not a gain/ master type deal. Granted I did play it at a low volume because I was in a music store and I'm nowhere near ready to buy my next head yet. I guess once I get some cash in my pocket and get serious, I'll go around and play heads at real volumes.

No. It is based on the original SVT's preamp which is VERY different from the CL. Where the VR may fall short in volume is its use of 12AU7 for driver tubes instead of the real SVT's 12BH7's. 12BH7's have a higher power output and drive the output section harder.
You don't buy an SVT for cosmetics or the second channel. The original SVT has a tone all its own and sadly, the VR is as close as we'll probably see in a modern amp, but given Loud's treatment of Ampeg's workers, I strongly encourage you to spend your money on a different amplifier.

Sadly, many amps that were once USA made, are now being made in China, and the far east.
I've gone to Yorkville amps. Those are still made in North America, and seem to be very reliable. Actually, there are still a number of USA manufacturers. Problem is, a lot of it is outside of my price range(talking Eden, Aguilar, EA, etc.)
Psycho, have you had a chance to look inside of a Traynor YBA 200 yet? If so, what do you think of it?

since I have a situation with my VR.
I'm noticing that when,
I get the normal channel one overdriven too fast (10 o'clock)
When I switch to the "bright" channel one (the one above)
it drops in volume and can crank it further. (12 o'clock)
I'm using a Kubicki Factor and a 5 String Musicman Stringray 29th Ann.
which are active basses (18v/9v respectively)
I will try with a passive bass and see if it helps somewhat.
Can anyone help me out here and let me know why this might be happening?

It's normal. The bright input resistor is just over twice the value of the regular input resistor (47K versus 100K) so you have an approximate 3dB volume difference between the two.

I have a SVPCL preamp, and an SVT-AV head. So, the pre into the power section of the Classic head = SVT-VR, yes?

what about the early overdriven sound?
Is this normal at 9 o'clock with an active bass?
how I know if this is normal and not a problem with the tubes??

BTW
My SVT-VR is brand new with only 2 hours on the tubes.
I always turn it on and leave it in standby
for at least 15 minutes before i use it.

It's close, but NOT identical.
The power amp in the VR does not have a bunch of the "extra" stuff (protection) that is in the CL. And the cathode resistors are back to 1 ohm in the VR.
