SVT-VR vs. SVT-CL

Well.

I went, test it again... and bought it, the SVT-VR, with the classical 8x10 cab (SVT-AV), and it sounds kicking...

The amp goes even better when playing with the band, has this deep intense bass and midrange that I had never heard of any solid state amp (eventhough, I've never tried those fancy Aguilar and Bergantino amps you love, that because they are out of question over here in México).

Any advices on this amp?

I dont want to go and make it a piece of garbage, but it is sounding huge!

One question maybe... Speakon or 1/4?

I have both, but I dont really know what is the difference...

Thanks for sharing guys!

Now, back to my amp! (it pairs so well with my beloved stingray 5!!!!!)

Got one of the second American runs. It works good!

Recently, with all this talk about Ampeg moving overseas, I started to worry, because I never checked if my SVT-VR was made in USA or any other country. I mean, yeah, a lot has been talk about ampeg moving overseas, but I find that saying that this kind of operations mayt have problems, specially the first years, not because the overseas production is bad, just a matter of logic. Some things may not work that well at the first time.

So, I ran and checked my SVT... good, is made in the USA.

I can rest, because over here, guarantee issues are almost impossible to get sorted, this things are sold as gold pieces of... gold... LOL, Eventhough that I paid less than what I would have paid on any Guitar Center on USA.

Congrats on your new rig!

I really get a kick of reading the posts on the SVT-CL.

This is probably the most thrash-talked amp that ampeg ever built. LOL

So many complain about how lousy these amps sound compared to the old ones. Thats not true. It just sounds different. Period.

I bought an SVT-CL 4 years ago with an 810 cabinet. The VR wasn't "invented" yet. I've never played through a 70's vintage SVT so I don't have any basis for comparison other than what's been posted here by others. Having said that, I don't regret having a "plain old SVT-CL" and an 810. It has all the volume I could ever ask for and when EQ'd, can get some serious drive going. The SVTIIIPro and SVT410HLF is my main gigging rig, but I enjoy dragging out the "fridge" from time to time.

If the VR is better than the CL, you have to ask yourself, how long will Ampeg keep offering the CL before going with just the VR? Just a thought...

Welcome to the tubey goodness of Ampeg!! :D

I think they are different amps. I have played them both, but just owned one... so, that "better" word, let's change it for "different".

I think tht CL looks after a more modern sound in a valve context, while the VR tries to emulate the old school vibe, which is not always the best thing. I mean, one single amp, one single bass won't fit into every possible music... If you see what I mean.

It does very well, but as with any 300 watt power amp, its sweet spot its a higher volumes. Just about searching around the eq, and that's it. This amp is made for screaming loud. That's why I have another amp, for small rehearsals and gigs. It's cool to have the option.
