Swap out PUPs on Ibanez Mikro

Anyone here done it? Tell me your story. What did you choose? Why did you choose that PUP? What was the result? Any wisdom to impart?

The stock pickups on a Mikro are woefully underwound, and that is why it sounds thin. On my friend's Mikro bass last Christmas I bought him a "used" Vintera P-pickup that the seller bought the bass and immediately unsoldered the leads and removed it, so it was essentially a new pickup. It gave the bass depth, roundness, articulation, but no harsh top end. To go with it, his daughter bought him an SD Apollo split-coil bridge J-pickup, which has the range, clarity and smoothness to match, as well as hum reducing. We then strung it with short scale flats to make a very comfortable bass.

TBH there's nothing wrong with the stock pickups, they're far better than you're going to get in other brands at this price-point.

I’m not looking for anything specific. But there aren’t a lot of options for short scale basses and many of them have only a single PUP or just don’t appeal for a variety of reasons. Seems like a good way to get a whole different sound without spending almost a grand for a Gibson or Mustang.

I’d assume that any standard PJ set would fit the mikro. I never felt the stock pickups were that bad when I played them in stores, but if you must change them, you shouldn’t need special short scale pickups.
