Sweepable Mids: Yay or Nay?

Thanks for starting this topic! I'm currently designing (or trying to) an onboard EQ for my fretless project bass. I want sweepable mids, and I'm playing with different ranges and sweep tapers. I don't have much experience with this type of eq (at least on an instrument) and I'm having a hard time deciding what to go with. At least I thought I wanted sweepable mids... after spending hours listening and tweaking, I'm wondering if it's worth the trouble, and I'm drifting toward the "too many options for too little difference" school. I'm actually considering having only a wide-range sweepable mid, and no bass or treble controls. That sounds bizarre at first, but considering that amps typically have bass and treble controls, they seem a bit redundant, and I don't want a lot of knobs on the bass.

I've owned amps with 20 knobs and ones with 5 knobs. I like the ones you can turn on and they sound good to me with minimal tweaking. (5 knobs... And I almost consider the hi and low push buttons on an svt to be redundant). I don't want to feel like I'm solving a math equation just trying to find a sound I like. The whole parametric and graphic eq on one amp seems redundant also and almost counterintuitive to me. Each is to their own but that's a quick route to sounding like a pile of mud for me personally. I want to play, not eff with knobs all night. (And I do if I have too may).

For me, it would depend on the bass. I used to have a G&L L-1500, on which a sweepable mid control would have been extremely useful, usually to pull back the sometimes nasal high mids. Heck, two sweepable mid controls, one for high mids and one for low, could have been helpful. On my new M-2500 with fixed mid control and pickup blending, I don't feel the need for sweepable mids.

Personally, I would just as soon have my pups wired straight to the jack with a push/pull knob to mute it with. however, I've learned that the controls actually being there are part of the sound of the basses that I prefer (Fenders, MMs), whether they are utilized or not. Even with Alembics Series 1s, I had all the controls wide open. The idea of having to fiddle with knobs during a song doesn't appeal to me at all.

However, that's just me. I'm just weighing in. Not at all judging the merits either way.

I prefer a sweepable mid control. But I guess I could go either way. I love my P and it doesnt have a mod control. But my ATK does. I do keep it flat almost all the time though. Depending on the situation, I may bump it. So I guess I dont utilize mids onboard so much. So I guess I could go without it. Considering I have so much control with my board.
