You don't need anything really, but a lot of "cover" songs have enough overdubs and treatment that a bassist can often get away with adding some sonics of their own - especially in a three-piece!

I used to do it with 12th fret harmonics too (in standard tuning). When I saw Aerosmith on SNL, it didn't look look TH played it with harmonics though. I could be wrong. I think he plays it with a pick too, right? I played it fingerstyle.

Anyway, some fun interpretations here.

Actually, I believe he plays this part with a pick and middle and ring fingers, although you can get a very similar effect using your thumb instead of the pick.
