Switchable Mono/Stereo Setup – Wiring Help

I just did this exact thing to my thunderbird and it turned out great. here's a diagram I found on talkbass

I think the dual gang pot sounds like the perfect solution to my problem – thanks for the suggestion! That will allow me to keep it to 3 control knobs and have the 3-way switch as well.

From what I know about the Broncos (I don't actually have the bass yet) the body is pretty thin, so I doubt it would have the cavity depth to accommodate the first one, second one should be fine though.
 
Now the elephant in the room, what 2nd pickup? MM between the bridge and pickguard? Mud bucker at the neck?

The current plan I have is to install some kind of Rickenbacker-esque pickup at the bridge. I saw an old thread of a Bronco build where someone replaced the middle pickup with a Nordstrand 51P4 (with 17mm spacing) so I'm currently leaning towards doing that too. I figure that would be a nice versatile setup, and would work well for what I'm going to use it for.
