Switching from Markbass 8x10 to Ampeg 8x10

Wanting to pull the trigger on an ampeg 8x10 (2005 I think) cabinet. I feel like the Markbass just is a bit too bright on the mids and highs and just sounds maybe a bit too muffled on the low ends. Is that a smart move? I know gone is something subjective but I have always liked the ampeg tones.

It depends on your taste and artistic vision. I personally think the Ampeg 810E sounds extremely muffled. I used to own one .


Always best to try before you buy. If you have tried the cab and like what you hear, it doesn't matter what I think .

Are you using the GK800rb (from your profile) on the Markbass cab? I find it hard to believe it would sound muffled on the low end. You may want to post your settings. There's a lot of love for that amp on this site so you may get some suggestions that can help. The only other thing I can suggest is maybe an HPF might help and is a lot cheaper than a cab.

I am running the 800! Pretty much running it with the EQ flat, volume at noon, boost around 10-11 and running a sansamp for some flavor

(The ampeg is also a decent price and wouldnt end up in any financial loss)

I went the opposite way, ampeg 810 to markbass 108. 100 lbs was so much easier to move and I liked the clarity of the mb.

In your situation, I would have a look and give a try to a set of two GK Neo IV 4x10.
You would get the sweetness without the harshness.
The tone will be in between the Ampeg and the Markbass and your lower back will thank you !

These kinda dogs always look like the old guys with big bushy beards that yellowed around the mouth area. I'm guessing Oliver just has a naturally darker face, though it wouldn't suprise me if he also ate like a dog heh

the 2005 will be the SLM version, all of the threads on TB talk about the "dark" "particle board" years...I had a 610 from 2005 it was muffled and not good...I sold it FAST.

I've played both. To me, the markbass seemed tubby and fairly sterile. The ampeg sounds the way I want it to. It's sounds strong, with a round and even character...bass.

But, I'd just buy a new one.

That's one thing I'm skeptical about. There is one from 07 on a marketplace I inquired about but haven't heard back yet. That one was a made in China back tag. Would that be a better option?

Muffled lows ? - usually midrange and high are muffled and lows are either non existent, or lacking or not enough oomph. Try putting a blanket over a full range speakers, usually the lows are still there but the highs and mids will be -> muffled.

I'm not a speaker expert but I do have a lot of experience playing through different cabinets. Looking at the Markbass 8x10 which is a ported cabinet probably designed for a solid state head with a relative high damping factor.
Standard 108HR – Markbass
Where as the Ampeg 8x10 is a sealed infinite baffle designed to work best with tube amps with their lower damping factor. I have heard and played a Ampeg 8x10 with both tube and SS heads and I much prefer the way it sounds with a tube head.
SVT-810E Cabinet
A couple of specs I noticed that are different between these 2 cabinets. 1) is sensitivity. The Markbass is 105 dB SPL sensitivity where as the Ampeg is 100 dB SPL. If these measurements are comparable then the Ampeg will need more than twice the power to match the output of the Markbass. And, 2) is weight. The Markbass is approx. 90 lbs and the Ampeg weighs 140 lbs which means that you can probably schlep the Markbass around by yourself if need be but, there is no way one can schlep around the Ampeg fridge alone unless you are some sort of weight lifter.

You need to try the Ampeg with your head and bass beside your Markbass in an A-B comparison to see what the difference is.
