SWR 8" Speakers

Eminence. 160w handling each. Long throw. The Celestions were a leap forward in throw over the Bag Ends with their soft rolled surround. These are another leap. It is not a subtle difference. No one has exaggerated here.
They are called LDSs. I don't remember the model #. Can you call LDS?

In a Henry it would cost you about $480. Not bad. Swapping out two Bart pu in your bass could cost you $200 just in parts. The power handling would go up to 1280w.
Whoa!

I have no doubt they are a leap forward, given an appropriate definition of 'forward'.

Lots of boxes will make pants flap. Very few sound like a first generation Henry.

True point. The first generation Henry was outstanding. I was not impressed with the new ones in the same way the newer chrome front GIII lost some character that the IIs had. The BBII doesn't sound exactly the same with the LDS as it did with the Celestions.. Live it does but alone it has a different thing. "Flapping Pants" is not a tone description that I seek. However losing all sense of fragility in a rig is a good thing. The low power handling of the Henry is not a plus. The only rig I've had to replace drivers in has been my BBII. The second time was my error. (the speaker lead touching the cone). The Celestions were fine.

Bill Fitzmaurice may be able to chime in here to say how things would be with the upgrade given the port size and location cab size etc.

But if replacements dry up then........

Don used a couple of long throw 8" woofers. One was a custom 16 ohm Eminence driver built just for LDS, the other is 8ohm and can be found at the link below. I don't think he's got any more of the 16 ohm left and with the way the economy is, I doubt he'll be ordering any soon.

What is the make and model of these LDS speakers everyone is on about? Those guys aren't making em themselves, and I'd be surprised if they sell anywhere near enough to be having somebody build the things as an OEM type deal.

huh; interesting
the long throws i bought from him came in B&C boxes...

A box is a box. If you got 8" long throws from Don they were Eminence. It's most likely that the B&C box was just convenient for him to use for shipping. Especially if you got the 16ohm 8" long throw. Eminence shipped those in one huge box on a pallet with each driver seperated by a cardboard divider.

Ralf

They were 8 ohm. This happened on two seperate orders.
Does B&C make 8" drivers? The speakers sure fit the box....
Odd coincidence; but, they do look like the daytons.

Yes B&C makes 8" drivers. Don built quite a few Neo 8" cabs using them. Regardless of the box your drivers were shipped in, if Don called them "long throws", they were Eminence.

i pulled a speak from my henry junior 4x8 this morning, they were hand labeled in black sharpie "LDS 8 ohm"

no other numbers, however they DO look like the DAYTONS, with the rubber surrounds. i bought them NOV '07 from Don.

i've got an email in to him to confirm that (whatever they are) they are still available as i'm now interested in 4 more.

edit: the DAYTON PDF on their ST210-8 speaker states it is a "long excursion design" (long throw), 180 watt RMS. can anyone absolutely confirm that IS the 8 ohm long throw that LDS sells?

If you're willing to believe me - then yes, I can absolutely confirm that they are the Dayton woofers that I gave the link to further up in the thread.

That being the case I wouldn't replace the eights in that box. While the power rating seems fine that's not what limits output, Vd (driver displacement) is. At 123cc each eight of the Daytons come to 984cc. A single Eminence Kappalite 3015 LF is 846 cc, and a pair of them come in a lot less money than eight of the Daytons. Along with a couple of midrange eights to cover the top end you'll get a lot more pant flapping for your buck.

So.....you're suggesting he gut his Henry, and install two 15's, a coupla mid drivers, and a new crossover...

:scratching head:

i'm probably mis-understanding something.

I read that Mr Fitzmaurice is just thinking economy here- that a box with the 3015LFs would be less expensive than all those 8s and give more bang-for-buck. Yes?
And sound better in the bargain. There is no such thing as one driver that works equally well across the entire bandwidth of electric bass. Eights are great in the mids and highs, but not down low. Fifteens are great down low but not up high. Combining fifteens and eights gives great lows and great highs with no compromises anywhere.

You gotta stop it with this.

I'm going to go right past a debate on what exactly 'better' is supposed to mean in this context, because I'm pretty sure our aesthetic judgments are so far apart that such a discussion would be meaningless anyway. However:

I'm sure you are nice to puppies and everything, and I have no reason to doubt that your boxes do exactly what you claim they do, but come on man. Every other thread on speaker systems ends up with you popping in to mention that:

a. an efficient multi way speaker box is the 'best' solution,

b. really the 'best' thing to do is to use a mid-range driver

c. no commercial manufacturers offer such a creature

You usually stop just short of coming out and mentioning that plans for such a system can be purchased at http://www.billfitzmaurice.net

Lots of people associated with higher profile equipment manufacturers than you frequent this forum. None of them spend anywhere near as much time promoting the design philosophies they are following and disparaging the design philosophies of others. In fact, I can't think of anyone else that really does that at all.

This is where I unsubscribe.
The OP was just looking for replacement 8's, not a new design for his cab.

ciao.
As a matter of fact I was PM'd asking me to add my advise to this thread as to whether driver replacement was worthwhile. And IMHO the answer is yes- with two 15s and two 8s.
