It appears that the go-to choice for direct-replacement drivers for the BBII are the LDS long-throw 8's. I also have a BBII, and while my drivers are in great shape, I find that the little amp has a poor weight/performance ratio. It's a heavy little bugger given that it won't keep up with a drum set without the clip lights flashing.
With regard to LDS long-throws:
- Do they increase the overall output level of the box? It sounds like they do ("pants-flapper"). Does a BBII (160watt) with these drivers work well for medium-volume rehearsals with a drummer? I'm thinking of a 70's funk/soul cover band application. The amp currently works, but barely (I sit on the ground in front of it to hear it better).
- Is there a noticable change in the tone? I would expect this to be minimal, perhaps an 'opening up' of the low frequency response due to the increased xmax. Due to the two-way nature of the cabinet, I would think that the overall character of the amplifier would remain intact - i.e. warm and un-tubby in the lows, with a subdued version of sizzly SWR highs.
- Are they available with neo magnets? I would really like to reduce the weight of this box. The volume limitation would be far less annoying if it didn't weigh so much. The test here would be whether I can carry it three or four city blocks without having to change hands. Currently one block's distance requires a switch.
