The goliath III's seem to get more love on TB than the goliath IV's, I'm wondering what the differences are regarding general tone, sensitivity and max. SPL. And what's the big deal about the post Fender era (inferior speakers?) I play heavier type music, some clean some with overdrive/distortion usually with a 5 str., in general I like a punchy cab with no mud on the bottom. Any input would be helpful, thanx.

SWR Goliath III vs. Goliath IV

I have not owned any of the IV series, but I do own SWR Pre & Post Fender cabs and don't see any difference. Both are made very well and sound like I expect an SWR cab to. They are definitely a "colored" line of cabs.
Can't help you with a comparison. But I can say that GIII's absolutely kick butt, sound excellent, are difficult to kill, and weigh a lot. Very happy with mine, have had a II and a III for many years. Still nothing better out there IMO.
I'm going to tryout the IV this weekend, just wondering if I'm missing anything with the III (don't see many for sale used so people must hold onto them)
I can't give a comparison because I've never played a G IV, but have owned a couple of G IIIs since '95 (yes, they're post Fender!). I've been very satisfied with mine, and feel it presents a very big sound. Plenty of bass, good mids, and more highs than I can use, with a ton of power handling.
The reason nobody's fawning over SWR cabs here seems largely due to the "flavor of the month" syndrome that is so prevalent on these forums. Also, many say quality was compromised when the "Evil Giant Fender" bought the once beloved small company. I can attest, though, to the build quality of my '95 model cabs, as Hurricane Katrina stripped one bare. I got to see the cab construction with all components and covering removed. VERY GOOD!!
From what I've read, the main difference is the use of Eminence drivers in the the IVs rather than PAS in the IIIs. I was told by my reconer in '95, that there wasn't a better 10" for bass guitar, so I proceeded with a full recone job on the PAS woofers.
Eminence makes the speakers in the majority of cabs these days, and I feel that SWR is using a quality product in the current line. The biggest negative for me is the weight. It's getting harder for me to load my SUV with mine, so I leave it in the band trailer and let the road crew deal with it while I search for a lighter, yet ballsy cab that I can substitute for it.

Yep, and there's zero substantive difference between the pre-/post-FMIC G-IIIs. I have both and have carefully examined them.
I have a bunch of G-IIs and G-IIIs. They're fine, if heavy.
Haven't tried the G-IVs.
Yup, I AB'ed my old G3 with a students new G4 and couldn't pick any real difference. Built like a brick and just about indestructible (and heavy!). That said, I recently sold my G3 but kept my SWR Bigfoot 212 which is much lighter. I find my Berg NV610 much easier to move around than the Goliath, although unfortunately you can't stack stuff on top of it for moving like you can with the Goliath - it was also a great gear trolley!
