SWR SM 1500

It's time consuming to do a good job adapting a part that doesn't quite fit. I see a fair amount of real hack jobs with the expected results. It's often possible to adapt, but takes more skill than the average tech has IME.

You're not wrong. It cost me a decent amount, because his first estimate was, "do you really want this amp?" - the guy is a retired USMC Radar and Electronics Tech who worked on F-4 Radars in the early 60s, and then A-6 Radars before working on the EA-6B Prowler and ALQ-99 pods. The dude knows his stuff- but that ain't cheap- nor should it be.

I asked him about the Aural Enhancer mod on my SM-400s- he said, "I'll do it, but that's like dropping a Chevy motor into a Mustang. It will never be a Mustang after that." Maybe if I get that parts amp....
 
To the OP; if you choose to use SWR I highly recomend the SM400 or 500's.
Also, they are completely useless without a HPF.

Bought an SM400 is the late 80's and have had it ever since.
Most of it's life has been in a 3U rack with a vented top panel and a fan mounted in the back of the case blowing over the cooling vents.
My buddy has one too and bought it at the same time; no rack / no fan. Bullet proof for both of us; his went down a flight of stairs...
With a HPF and a fan it's one of my main gigging amps.
Just bought a mint SM500 (that did need a tube but otherwise perfect) for $250 shipped. Probably a dumb idea but it was so cheap...

Are the fans in the 500's a little noisy or am I just the lucky one?
 
My go to tech out here is a former huges RADAR tech who also designs and builds custom electronic gear. You're 100% right about the not cheap part...a simple part repacement when susbtitutions are needed can often cost almost as much as some new amps do.

Agedhorse actually gave my SWR head a tune-up a few years back and I thought his rates were more than fair for the knowledge, skill, experience, and test equipment he offered. Fortunately, my head only needed some cleaning and tweaking/adjustments, no replacement parts even after its trip from the east to west coast.

There is an added cost to owning this vintage gear over the newer stuff.

Since the new Class D amps can't be fixed at the component level at local shops (at least near me), aren't most repairs done by swapping boards?
If this is true, isn't it less likely that I will ever be able to get my 30 year old Class D amp repaired because of the cost of stocking that many complete boards as well as obsolescence?
Not complaining or looking for trouble but just curious.
Will my GK RB series be more repairable in the future than my MB series?

Since we are learning the new way of normal, maybe gear will become less repairable out of warranty.
Approx. X many warranty years after last date of manufacture, as board assemblies become scare faster than discreet components?
 
My guy won't work on modern build boards from China/the Pacific region. Something about how the automated soldering process makes them pretty much impossible to work on.
Yes, there are folks that work on this kind of gear every day but not at the "local amp shop" level IMO.
 
When my beloved Class D SWR Spellbinder Blue died I brought it to my veteran old school repair genius.
He looked at it, muttered something about Chinese, and said he couldn’t fix it.
A little research showed that a lot of car audio stuff is Class D, so I brought it to our local electronics fix-it.
A hundred bucks and well worth it for the irreplaceable (and rare as hen’s teeth) wonder.
 
I wonder what agedhorse thinks relative to the "economically supportable life" of the newer class D/SMPS gear versus the vintage tube and class AB SS stuff. I know he keeps the Genz Benz folks (with class D and SMPS heads) up and operating as the authorized factory repair point even though GB is out of business. I would say though that his case might be unique in that he was the designer of that gear.

I was less knowledgeable about amps when I had them but I loved the sound when I was playing alone but none of them could ever keep up with my loud rock band and would go into thermal mode... they also can push your speakers with some low low frequencies if your aren’t careful with your bass knob. I would only buy one if it was a steal these days. I’m talking like given to me deal. But that’s just my opinion.

They really need a High Pass Filter. But with an HPF they sing like a bird, loudly. I use a Broughton always on HPF in the effects loop of my SM-400s. It is a night and day difference.

Before the Broughton I used a rackmount EQ that has both an HPF and an LPF- but it was way too much gear for what the amp needed.

Good question. A good, and truly qualified tech won't have much difficulty working on modern gear no matter where it's from. The problem with service can generally be traced to techs who aren't qualified, techs who can't troubleshoot themselves out of a paper bag, and techs that lack essential mechanical skills.

Now for many products that come from China, it simply may not be worth the cost of repair and generally the less qualified the tech is the more expensive the repair becomes (ironic, eh?).

When I recommend qualified shops that are authorized for a particular manufacturer, the reasons are for experience with the product, access to service documentation, access to factory parts, and access to factory tech support.

Generally, class D modules with SMPS are not cost effective to repair due to the time necessary to effectively troubleshoot as well as the reasonable cost of replacement. For amp manufacturers that use industry standard class D platforms there's no trouble with parts going obsolete. Every module that I have used in the last 15 years are still available and I have plenty of stock to last probably another 10 or more years. Other amp manufacturers using these parts are in a similar situation. These modules have been manufactured in hundreds of times larger quantities than any single amp manufacturer could hope to attain.

For proprietary class D technology, this is more challenging because it depends almost 100% on the amp manufacturer supporting the product, and providing replacement parts for a product that was never manufactured in the quantities of class D companies like IcePower, Hypex and Pascal. This is especially true of products that integrate the SMPS with the class D amplifier. When these parts are gone, there really isn't an alternative (that also meets EMC and safety regulations, a large part of the cost of this technology).

This depends on the particular product as well as the value of the equipment. I have some modules that I have designed over the years that use surface mount technology (SMT) and there's really not much different as long as the sizes of the parts are "reasonable". Where the parts get very, very small it becomes impractical to troubleshoot and repair economically. This is technology based and completely independent of where it is manufactured.

Now, when I used SM400s, we didn't have readily available HPF units. Well, maybe we did. But I wasn't aware. There was no internet like it is today, none of my friends used em, I never read about any pro using them. Not that you shouldn't, not that you could, but the SM-400 came with the tools to simulate one. And after a friend had an accident with a Hartke 410xl, totally operator error, I read that manual carefully. Here's what it said, and what I did...

In the original manual, and the one you can download now, it gives a ton of instruction, warning folk of its frequency response, and directions on how to tune it to the cabinet you were using. The manual, of course, says to use SWR Cabinets, but this procedure taught me a bunch about how to use eq, and I use the same procedure to this day with these amps. I personally never had an issue controlling lows. Never blew a speaker. And haven't had to add a Pass Filter in any rig.

Turn up the amp to a listenable volume. Turn the left most Parametric knob fully counterclockwise. Pull the slider above the leftmost knob all the way down. Play a note, lowest preferably, and let it sustain. While the slider, level control, is in the fully cut position, slowly turn the knob, frequency select, rotating it clockwise. At some point in the first third of it's range, the lows will disappear from the cabinet. That is, essentially, the cutoff point of the cabinet's low frequency response. Turning the knob back counter clockwise, stop when the lows partially return, or, like I learned to do, leave the knob where the lows disappear. Now, hit that same note again. And slowly raise the slider and stop when the lows return. I kept the frequency select knob at that point. Always. Each cab is different, but once I found that spot for any cab, that's where I'd leave it. The slider that controlled that frequency level is what I used to tame the sub lows the 400, 400s and 500 fed my cabinets. At home, the slider was near flat, tho later I learned to appreciate the tone with varying degrees of cut. It tightened the response, accentuating the mids, where the tone is, which I tuned with the exact same procedure. The right most slider, the highs, I set just below the cabinets crossover frequency for the horn, taming it, too.
At gigs or rehearsals, higher volumes, I cut the low slider a lot more, til at the volume I desired the speakers quit moving. Or nearly did. This made my rig more efficient, using lots less power to try an reproduce sub lows that were damaging and, that a casual listener would not miss, plus, those lows were in P.A. subs already. I didn't need em on stage. I could hear myself better, thus my volume settings reduced. And, it left me three eq bands, plus bass, treble and aural enhance controls, to manipulate tones or rooms. I could run my gain higher, too. Gettin passive basses to respond like active. Along with the pretty good limiter circuit, this took care of low end issues, and no more blown drivers. With no hpf.

Then I got ideas to steal other amp's tones, in fun. I'd research GK's eq points on their 4 band eq, set my eq to match, and tried their manual's eq settings. The amp taught me a ton about eq, learning what frequencies sounded like, trained my ear, and I applied these things to P.A. eq and such, too.

My friends and I always found the 400, 400s, and 500 a bit lacking in output in our Hard Rock context. That's why I moved up to the SM900. It's response and reactions are quite different than the 400 series. More power, less low end initially, and just a different feel. Where I felt the 400 was lacking for me, the 900 made up for it, in spades.

I still say the SM400 preamp is my favorite sounding. Even Marcus Miller used it's preamp in front of a Bass 350, because the tone was in one, and the focused power was in the other. Today, my heavy rock buddies still aren't keen on the 400, 400s or 500. I play different styles today, and bridged into an 8ohm cab, it's plenty on all but my biggest gigs. Bridged at 4ohms with two cabs? It sounds great, even if the master is up above noon. And it is plenty for anything then.

I still like the 900 for gig use. Bridged at 8 with any cab, it just works better at lower settings for me. But the preamp in the 400 series has a thing. And that amp means a lot to me for the education. I figure all the guys who know SWR know this procedure. Just a reminder for others to read the manuals. Those old SWR manuals are some of the best. And the information in there isn't only applicable to SWR amps. Or just bass amps. It's applicable toward sound in general. PA, too. Even monitors. If you understand the cabinets frequency response, you can use eq to get the most out of any cab. Or system.

Today, filters are everywhere. Easy. Back when we had no clue. These procedures will work for the SM-1500, too. It's tools are far more precise than the old SWR stuff. Cutting lows at higher volumes is usually good practice. Helps in lots of ways. Be it a filter or the provided eq. Being able to select the right frequency for the cabinet can really be an asset.

Also, a buddy taught me a trick with the Aural Enhance circuit. I hit a harmonic at the 12th fret of the A string. And start turning the Aural Enhance up. As soon as I hear it take effect and change the tone, I leave it. Forever.

Your tech mutters too much for his knowledge level, he probably ought to keep his mouth shut and go back to school to continue his education.

3. The entire power amp module including the SMPS is a standard part that Fender (former owner of SWR and Genz Benz) stocks and even supplies the Fender part number on the SWR docs. I even stock it. I believe the retail cost of the part is in the $75 range, so it's generally not worth spending any time troubleshooting other then to confirm without doubt that the part is bad..

Good question. My situation is indeed unique as I have enjoyed the enthusiastic support of every company associated with Genz Benz, including KMC Music/JAM Industries and Fender. That said, I still repair amps that are 15-20 years old and still stock most parts. When I mentioned that proprietary technology is tougher to support, that applies to the SMPS that I designed for the NeoPak 3.5. While generally I can fix the SMPS, occasionally I find a parts that has failed that is no longer available, specifically the custom magnetics. I could have some custom made, the cost would be prohibitive. I haven't yet had one that I couldn't find a solution for, and I may have one more SMPS left on the shelf, but the point is coming where IF the problem is with the SMPS and I can not repair it in-house, it just may not be a viable amp to repair. This amp design is over 15 years old by now.

For Genz Benz SMPS/class D products that use IcePower technology, these should be supportable for another 10 years without much difficulty and I have plenty of IcePower inventory to support all models of our former endeavor.

And when it comes to new amps, it's mostly markbass and I don't like the tone, I had a head and a box of 2x10, but I sold and accidentally found an SWR WP 15 and the difference between the two was like heaven and earth

The point is that, although the repair guy who has rescued me numerous times over the last few decades was clueless, Class D stuff can be repaired by a competent electronics tech; and that $100 is a deal to keep a prized amp.

...the trick is finding that competent tech with access to parts when you need them...I'd keep that person's number handy and agree that $100 to rescue a prized piece of gear is a bargain. :thumbsup:

Kind of like asking your local primary care physician to do brain surgery. They are both doctors with very different specialized training.

I will say my shop is great with tubes and traditional class AB gear.
Plus they keep old amp and keyboard parts from salvaged gear to try and keep the old stuff running strong.

Doug just got the electronics in my early 90's Warwick Frortress 1 back up and operating at 100%. These guys are not cheap and they do have a backlog, but the work is top notch.
