SX basses. worth it?

I have a Squier Affinity Jazz 5. It kicks copious amounts of ass. The 2010 Squiers are not garbage, even stock.

I think its depends what you expect, some people love SX, i think they are crap, some people love the new squier classic vibe, i think they suck, it all depends what kind of basses you are used to play in my opinion!

Please take note that the person to whom you replied to clearly put the acronym "imo" in the highlighted sentence. IMO, or In My Opinion is a clear statement that this is indeed the posters Opinion. This has been drawn from his experience....just like you're loving your SX has been drawn from your experience.
Seriously though....I have an American Fender Precision Deluxe that IMO is the best bass in the world. I absolutely love it. Doesn't mean that everyone else is going to hold to the same opinion. It would be a boring world if they did. (End Rant)On the note of the SX/Essex basses....I haven't played all of them obviously, but I have played a couple. IMO, the ones I've played were not all that great. One had bad fretwork and the other....well, it's not worth mentioning. It had been treated so badly by a former owner that it was hard to tell if it had been a good instrument in that past or not. Poor thing.
Anyway, to the OP....like any bass, you will want to try out as many as possible and buy the one that works for you. You might be like me and not find an SX that is right for you....or you might fall in love with the first one you pick up. Try em. At the very least you'll have fun looking.

And at this point, after so many of these, it is so far beyond not even being clever. Most people I know only know of Rondo music or SX or Essex from this very site.

Not true. Lets see: a 5 string jazz bass delivered to my door for a total of 142 bucks that only needed a set up and is gigable. Oh wait, you're right. Totally not worth it.

Yes, that's his opinion, based solely on his personal experience,and it's my opinion that he's wrong by making such a generalisation. Certainly, my opinion is based on my presonal exeprience, but not solely. I base that opinion that he's wrong by the fact that the vast majority of personal experiences expressed here by those who have owned/played SX's, are positive and jibe completely with mine. Enough so that I believe my experience to be more typical than not. As always though,YMMV. (ahem)
FWIW, there is a repair tech (Buzzards Bass, I think is the name of the business) and he deems that SX basses all need some work in order to make them playable. For the life of me, I don't get the concept of buying a $100.00 bass and then spending andother $200.00 or more to make it "playable" Should I not be able to play a brand new instrument with nothing more than a decent setup?
Yeah, well I would take anything that guy says with a grain of salt. Do a search, lots of drama with a disappearing act he did a while back and left some customers hanging, not to mention everyone wondering if he was even alive or not.:scowl:
I just bought an ash Ursa that doesn't "need" anything except new strings, but I have bought a few in the past that did need work.
Yep, I changed strings , played around with the saddles, and installed a small shim. No issues since.
I've seen alot of SX basses and was wondering if they were worth getting. im looking to get a P&J style bass and i seen this SX bass on rondomusic.com Like do they sound good. are they strong basses (wont break easy). or any other info you could good will be greatly appreciated.
I'm guessing you may be young, and/or somewhat new to bass playing. I've had three SX basses, and I wouldn't recommend them to beginners. I've always replaced the nut and pickups on mine, although I haven't had the kinds of trouble that some of the posters on this thread have had. IMO, a better out-of-the-box inexpensive bass would be one of the inexpensive Yamaha or Ibanez models, such as the Yamaha RBX170 which sells for $179.95 at MF. If you're new, have a more experienced friend play it to make sure it doesn't have problems.
The Essex I currently have I've had for a little more than 2 years, and it's been very durable, but I've replaced the pickups and nut, and shimmed the neck to bring the action down. It has the original pots and jack and works fine. I got it in part because I think the bodies and necks on these are generally solid, and I don't mind doing my own mods and repairs if necessary.
Thanks for the heads up (not that I was going to send him any work but it's good to know). If someone wants to use an SX as a modding platform or they like it right out of the box, more power to them. I won't take a chance on one because it's just too much hassle with cross border shipping etc for me to bother. That and I'm not so broke that I can't afford somethng a little better anyway.
I can't help with the shipping problems, but closouts are the way to go, if you can afford a few dollars more. Here are 2 of my favs:

Killer deals on both and both are great basses. And both are way better built than Squiers (which are in the same price range)If you only want one bass, I'd recommend the ATK, all day.
Whenever someone says, "________ basses are junk" you can pretty much ignore them and everything they say.
Everything I mentioned I didn't like about my SX was something that applied to all SX basses at the time. Kurt even said of the pickup offset "..they come from the factory that way."
