Oh yeah, I see what you mean. Did some searches online. It seems they're made in Brazil with not many for sale in the U.S. I'd like to find one in Sunburst.

I have an SX short scale jazz I bought at a yard sale for $35 (including Crate practice amp), because the kid that had it decided he wanted fretless and pulled the frets. He did a pretty decent job. I filled the kerfs, lowered the nut, shimmed the neck, and put some flats on it. Sounds and plays pretty good. If I were going to invest in it I'd change out the pups and pots. Maybe reinstall the frets.

BUT it has serious neck dive! That's a deal killer for me.

So all you SX owners - is neck dive common on SX or did I just get a bad one? I'd consider another SX if I thought it wouldn't dive.

Seems weird that a shorty would have neck dive..?

Bought my short scale SX Jazz on TB and it's my go-to bass, I love it. Just pulled the trigger on a short scale PJ, had it set up with flatwounds and it sounds great. Just wish I could find a black pickguard, the one on rondo's website is for the standard Ursa 3, not the 3/4 size.

In my effort to complete my conversion to short scale I found the SX short scale J necks I bought several years ago fit the neck pockets of my SCPB and P, J bass bodies very well. They work great.

Any great playing and sounding bass that you find for $150 is a good buy.

It may be that someone did some work on it, and that's part of why it's good.

I just have one a Jazz clone SX. I got it new for $100. It played OK and sounded OK. I added a bone nut, upgraded the pots, and popped in DiMarzio J's. Sounded better. I leveled the frets that buzzed, did a proper setup and dressed the frets. Now it played great, but I wasn't thrilled with the sound. Did a little routing and got a red pearloid jazz pickguard routed for a P pup. Popped in a set of EMG Geezer Butlers, and traded the cheap Chinese tuning machines for Gotoh Res-o-lites. It now plays, looks and sounds fantastic.

They are not bad off the shelf, but where they really shine is as a platform to mod. It's become my go-to bass.

Any opinions on the SX SJB75? 70's style Jazz with a swamp ash body with a bound maple neck. Retail here in the UK is £249 while the Basswood P's and J's are around £150. I can see their prices have increased over the years and the J in question is the same sort of money as a '77 VM Squier. I've got CV Squier guitars which I love for the money but my only experience of a VM was one I had shipped to my house for a friend a few years ago. It was the Jazzmaster long scale from memory and it seemed to have quite a thin body. That was nothing compared to the catastrophic neck dive tho. Just wondering if anyone has tried this SX model. I've read glowing reviews of the '77 VM on here and I'm in the market for a cheaper 70's style J bass.

Edit - I notice this is one of their 'higher end' models on their site with a MSRP of $519. I've seen some comparison threads but they look like they relate to older SX basses with some of the threads dating back to 2009.

I have a 5 string one (slightly modded):

It was my main player for 7 years or so. A solid instrument with a nice chunky neck.

I always change the pickguard to do a final Tweak-in on all my SX. Unfortunately they are all "handmade" which means really drilled with a hand drill so a you can't just buy a replacement guard. You have send the old guard to a custom place like Pickguardian and tell them make me a copy of THIS in (whatever you picked out as cool). it costs more, but for me the upgrade in looks always makes it seem worth the extra coin once I've done it! (example: Note cool Tort guard on SX in Avatar)

It is very rare to find a pickguard that needs no tweeking AND has all the holes drilled in the right places. I was fine with re-drilling the holes, since the old holes were covered up anyway, but if this bothers you, consider getting the pickguard without the holes. I know this is an option with some places... I have been most satisfied this place Custom Guitar Parts and Accessories. Everything you need to play! . No holes is an option on Strat and Tele pickups and he may do it on bass pickguards. That said, if it's a Jazz you're going to have to tweak the pickguard a bit anyway since the control plate on an SX comes to more of a point than a standard one anyway...
