SX question

<Noob alert!>

I see on rondomusic the 5 string SXs are listed as "4 + 1". Is this different than any other 5-string? Is it only listed like that because of the tuner being opposite the other 4?

Also, maybe a stupid general question, but for 5 string basses (including these), is the 5'th string lower (in pitch) than the existing 4?

Thanks

Michael

Yes

In most cases yes the 5th string is tuned to B so that the bass has BEADG tuning. But I know of several people who prefer to tune their 5-strings EADGC.

Yep, that's why it's called 4+1.

Most people go with a low B, so the tuning is BEADG. Some people want the higher notes, especially for chords or higher melodic work. In that case the tuning would be EADGC. Of course, there is no limit on the alternate tunings you can do with the right strings and bass, but these two tunings are what most people use.

EDIT: Looks like Diogenes types faster than I do. :)
