I stumbled across a Youtube video of one of these SX basses in action.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfTy6otnl20

The video description noted that it went for 200 Euros at one time, which equaled up to around 262 US dollars. :bassist: Needless to say...Instant GAS attack. Anyone lucky enough to have seen one, or tried it out? I've searched everywhere on the Internet, and I don't think there are any floating around anymore...Which is a shame. :bawl:

So- what is the word on this bass; any reviews that go beyond I like it?
Thanks!

I've spoken about it before a few times. It's nothing to rave about to be honest. It sounds surprisingly good. Very giggable. The pre is the weak section of the the electronics, but nothing too interfering. The finish work of the bass was a bit of a let down as there were permanent marker marking on the side of the fretboard for marking where the frets go and then there was some lacquer flaking.

My biggest qualm is the neck. It simply isn't strong. It's pretty easy to change the pitch of a note if you pull or push on the neck whilst fretting. It doesn't take much effort and if I wanted to, I could completely kill the note.

Someone should send these photos to Kurt & ask about a limited run of these SX models.

Kurt is the one that sold these. I believe he only got 10-12 of them over two shipments and the model was discontinued. He's very aware of them and I don't believe they'll be sold again.

Why not get a Warwick or a Spector?

Because a Warwick or Spector doesn't cost $159?

Overall, I'm very pleased with the instrument I got for the price I got. I don't mind flying with it or taking it on longer road trips when I would be much more apprehensive taking any of my others. It sounds good. Looks good. Very happy with it.

I'd love to be able to upgrade it, but the pickups aren't exactly standard size and the string spacing is some 14.x mm so aftermarket options really just aren't out there.

^Thanks for that, that eases my pains!
Mark

Well, I don't want to come across as negative on the instrument, but it's far too often people are "too proud" of their instruments to tell the truth about them. I've had some issues with mine sure. Threads like these pop up often enough to tell me that I could have this bass sold in a matter of hours and probably at a profit at that and I've still got mine.

So if your pain is eased, good! Because you can't have mine. ;)

Did this really ever cost $159?

The cheapest you can find only still lists it for well over $300.

That said, somebody I know has one (4 string version) and wants to sell it to me for around $200. He brags about it being a cheap but soundwise still a high-end guitar. Says I couldn't tell it apart from a real Warwick in a blind test. I would really appreciate some more objective, unbiased comments about it.

Did it cost $159? Yes. Does it still? Looks like it. Give Kurt a call.

So mow some yards!

The entire appeal of that bass was the fact that it was cheap and in many ways disposable. I wanted a bass that if something happened to it flying or such, I didn't get sick or lose 3 grand. I haven't mowed a yard in nearly a decade and I plan to keep that streak going. :p

Says sold out when you try to add it to cart...

A lot of knobs on that bass, so I assume its 3 band, volume and blend? What's the stack knob for?

I kind of expected something along those lines which is why I suggested calling. You can't navigate the site to that bass, but the page still exists so you can Google for it.

Selectable mid frequency if I recall correctly. I sold the bass a couple of months ago to an intern of mine. I swapped out the bridge pickup with an SGD. Sounded great.
