Symbols instead of words

The recent update changed the "personal menus," in the upper right corner to symbols.
This is NOT an improvement. I can understand multinational companies (GM) moving to symbols to streamline manufacturing. It's great when people of several cultures aren't forced to use English.
It serves no purpose in a forum. As far as I can tell your forum rules are all in English. The account creation is all in English. The VAST majority of content here is in English.
So why are we removing words from the interface?

Please make this user selectable or just remove it. If folks can't read the menu to use it they sure won't be able to get anything out of this site.

where is this happening?
On my app I have symbols, but the are NEXT TO the word for what Im looking at. For example, two word bubbles are next to "conversations" and a star is next to "watched", but it tells me what it is as well.

Words and symbols in my dark theme browser (Chrome/Mac) window.
Bingo! It's a screen size optimization thing.
Android phone in portrait orientation omits words.
Oh that sucks. So for people with tiny screens (I guess not that small) Talkbass has decided to make the things we interact with harder to access?

so your browser upgraded?
then I think that might be an issue the browser developers decided on for your particular phone for screen optimization. I would bet that youll find other sites do similar things in portrait mode and its not just a talkbass thing... I could be wrong, but Ive found that my phone in the past has done global changes that affected some things i did in ways I didnt like.

You misunderstand me.
I have NOT had any updates to my device software yesterday or today.

Hello,

It's basically a simple "responsive design" decision... You all on desktop browsers can see this too. Shrink your window down to the smallest size, and you'll see the words next to "inbox" and "alerts" disappear. I think the icons are pretty self explanatory, no? I think most would argue that having less clutter on a mobile display is a *good* thing....

Less clutter IS good.
Too small icons to touch IS bad.
