The lesson went pretty well. I will try to scan in the notes my teacher made on the chart next week. He just wound up listening to the version I worked from and then fixing the chords where I was off. Then I walked over the changes a bit with the new chart while he comped and listened. After listening for a bit (noting that I was just outlining the chord shapes up and down more or less) he talked / demonstrated some chromatic approaches (half step above or below the root on beat four & two half steps above or below the root on three and four) and then let me try them out. For homework he wrote out some other more linear approaches for me to practice around the cycle of fifths. The one measure lines are below. I am supposed to use them all over the neck and practice all permutations ascending, descending, alternating and leaping or changing direction where required due to the range of the instrument. Hope that makes sense!
Major - R - 3rd (above or below) - 5th - b5
Minor - R - b3 (above or below) - 5th - b5
Major - R - 2nd (above or below) - b3 - 3rd
Minor - R - 2nd (above or below) - b3 - 3
Major - R - 7th - 6th - 5th
Minor - R - b7 - 6th - 5th
Lastly of course I have to work on using some of these on Take the A Train. For sure the second set gets my fingers all twisted and feels the most awkward but I am doing okay with the others (I think). Ear training is going pretty well. I can hear / identify the notes of the major scale but am having trouble with the chromatic tones. The lower ones (#1/b2 and #2/b3) I do okay with but the upper I am struggling with (#4/b5, #5/b6, #6/b7). I am not giving up though!!! My apologies for rambling.
This is the ear training software I use on my computer:
