Taking a Cashier's Check

As a buyer I would NEVER feel comfortable doing that, unless it was from a business who was established enough that I knew their reputation was worth more than whatever I was paying. I know being the buyer is a little off topic here, but I feel it's worth mentioning.

Day or two? Nope. A week or more, unless you go to the bank of my choosing. Ship on receipt? Only a fool would do that.

I had someone try to pay for a vehicle with a cashier's check. I took it to the bank and they wouldn't accept it. The person had put my name "AND" his name on it. Since it was being deposited into my account, the bank would not allow it because his name is not associated with it. Kind of a weird thing since he was right there. But, I think he was trying to scam me. The teller told me I could take it to a bank where it was issued from and they would cash it. When I proposed we go to one of those branches that was nearby, he backed out.

It is sort of weird. I am a newbie here, and this is the first music forum where I have seen widespread resistance to CBC. I have used them in deals on mandolincafe and AGF, both without a word of complaint. I honestly wonder why that is? My first thought is that the demographic skews younger here than on either of those forums.

I sincerely doubt it's age. The classifieds here are very large, and we've probably seen many more scams here than on the mandolin site.....

Possibly. Talkbass is a larger forum. But My post wasn't meant to be a backhanded swipe at TB. It has been my experience that the older someone is, the less trusting they are of technology (Paypal) and the more trusting they are in people. I am not saying that that is a good thing.

Maybe. I'm older than you are by three years, and I wouldn't take a cashier's check unless the buyer was willing to do it by my exact instructions. And, I would NEVER ship without cashing the check first.

Postal MO's are nice, cash them at any Post Office. But....

I've been informed by more than one postal clerk NOT to endorse a Postal Money Order until the clerk verifies that it's real.

And that if you've already endorsed it before they verify it, and it turns out to be fake, you will be leaving that Post Office in handcuffs.

So yeah there are fake Postal MO's out there. And the Feds take it kinda seriously.

My last 2 jobs, covering the last 6 years or so, were for grocery stores, and checks were cashed at the customer service desk.
I am currently jobless. Since my mom died, I have been a full time stay at home dad to my kid, who is on summer vacation.
