Taking necks off...any problems?

Hey guys,

I am moving across the country in less than a week, and everything I am taking with me must fit in a honda civic coupe. I have already determined that taking my two basses in their hard cases is not an option, so I am thinking that I could take the necks off to save space.

I don't think there would be any problems if I did this. I am just concerned that when I put the necks back on there may be issues with alignment and proper fit, but maybe there is nothing to worry about. If it makes a difference, they are both Modulus basses, one with a carbon fiber neck and the other is a VJ4 with genesis neck (wood and carbon fiber).

Any advice? I know some of you have done this before.

Modulas basses wont have a problem like that/ Cheapo basses with loose neck pockets might. You have nothing to worry about imo.

I would probably try to figure out a way to get them in there without doing that. That sounds like the biggest pain in the neck way to transport a bass.

I dunno it doesn't seem like a huge undertaking. Just take the strings off and take off 4 bolts right?

Right.

And darkstorm makes a good point, better basses have a better neck-to-pocket relationship and alignment shouldn't be an issue when re-assembling your basses. In the event your strings aren't aligned centered on your fingerboard, loosening the strings, screws, manually shifting the neck, then re-tightening is easy to do.

If you have the basses out of their cases, what's the advantage of taking the necks off? You could just wrap them in some towels and [DEL]shove them in[/DEL] pack them gently top of everything else...

Heckfire, they're Modulus basses and made out of the same stuff the aviation industry uses in stealth fighters. You could strap 'em to the roof like an old mattress and they'd probably still be in tune when you reach your destination.

Why not package and ship them? You can take the necks off with no problem, but they will still take up a lot of room in the car.

No issues. Just be gentle, especially when reattaching the neck. If you experience resistance, don't force it.

That's what I want to know. Cases are the same size with or without basses in them.

I think I'm going to have to leave the cases behind at my moms place, they're just too big for the size of car that I'm taking, plus I have to fit all my non bass related stuff as well. I can't even bring a cabinet so I made my own small one out of a 12" pioneer subwoofer and an old PA cab I found.

I thought about shipping them but I'm a little low on $$ for that, so i'm gonna see how well they fit in the car and take the necks off if need be.
